BUFFALO, N.Y. – The first women's soccer victory of the season in NCAA Division I belongs to Northern Kentucky University.
NKU began its inaugural Division I season with a 2-0 victory over Canisius on Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
According to TopDrawerSoccer.com, the noon kickoff marked the first game of the regular season played this year across the nation.
Freshman
Martha Staab put the Norse on the scoreboard in the 42nd minute. She took a pass from junior
Allison Ponzer and was able to get her shot off as she was met by goalie Megan Tock.
Sophomore
Kelsey Laumann netted the final goal for the Norse in the 72nd minute. Ponzer and sophomore
Stacie Volker were credited with assists on the goal.
Canisius controlled possession in the opening 20 minutes of the game, but NKU took over for the remainder.
“As the game wore on, we improved,” head coach
Bob Sheehan said. “A big change from Division II is that the game is a little more physical, and I was happy with how the girls responded. It was great to able to put two goals up on the board.”
NKU finished with a 14-7 advantage in shots, while the Norse defense limited the Golden Griffins to just one shot on goal.
The Norse travel to Muncie, Ind., for two games next weekend at the Briner Sports Complex. NKU will face Ball State on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Western Kentucky at noon on Sunday.
