HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Two goals less than three minutes apart led Oakland (Mich.) past the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team, 2-0, on Friday night at the NKU Soccer Stadium.

Oakland (3-2-2) controlled possession early in the game, taking four shots in the first 20 minutes.

Meghan Reynolds put the Golden Grizzlies on the scoreboard first in the 20th minute.  She took a pass from Abigail Haelewyn and beat goalie Cassie Lingenhoel.  Her shot from 15 yards out found the left side of the goal.

Haelewyn assisted on the second and final goal of the game for Oakland in the 23rd minute as well.  Her pass set up Kyla Kellermann's shot that found the back of the net from 17 yards out.

“Oakland had a terrific team. They were coming off a tie with Michigan State,” NKU head coach Bob Sheehan said.  “We were able to settle in (after the opening goals) and competed well with them.”

NKU (2-5) created several opportunities in the second half but could not get a shot past goalie Shannon Coley, who was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the Week.  Coley finished with three saves on the night.

Both teams finished with 13 shot attempts with Allison Ponzer and Kelsey Zwergel leading the way for the Norse with a game-high four shots each.  NKU outshot Oakland by a 9-8 margin in the second half.

“I thought we were able to regroup, and our players picked up their competitive spirit,” Sheehan said.  “All in all, I was pleased with our effort.”

Lingenhoel and Stephanie Glass each finished with two saves on the day.

NKU travels to play at Youngstown State on Sunday.  Kickoff is set for noon.  Live stats and video will be available at NKUNorse.com.
