Kathryn Hale scored her first goal of the season in NKU's 1-0 victory over Stetson.

DELAND, Fla. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team only needed one goal in the first half to earn its first Atlantic Sun Conference victory as the Norse captured a 1-0 win over Stetson on Friday night at the Stetson Soccer Complex.
Kathryn Hale scored the lone goal of the game in the seventh minute.
Kelsey Laumann passed the ball to
Martha Staab, who crossed it into the box to Hale. Hale one-touched the ball and put it past Stetson goalie Victoria Troccoli for her first goal of the season.
Alyssa Welch gave the Hatters a chance to tie the game in the 55th minute, but
Cassie Lingenhoel, who took over in goal for the Norse in the second half, made a stop to maintain the NKU lead. Lingenhoel deflected Welch's first shot and her second shot went wide of the goal.
“I thought we really competed throughout the whole match,” NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan said. “Both of our keepers had very nice stops for us tonight, and our defense put forth a strong effort to hold on for the win. Overall, we were very pleased with the team effort tonight.”
Lingenhoel and
Stephanie Glass combined for the second Norse shutout of the season. Glass finished with four saves in the first half, while Lingenhoel added two saves in the second.
Glass improved to 2-2 on the season with the win.
Both teams entered the half with six shots and two corner kick attempts. NKU took over in the second half and ended with a 13-10 advantage in shots and edged Stetson in corner kicks by a 6-5 margin.
Kelsey Zwergel led the team with four shots, followed by
Ariel Fischer who collected three attempts.
The Norse improved to 4-7 overall, 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun with the win, while the Hatters dropped to 3-8, 1-2 in the Atlantic Sun.
NKU returns to action on Sunday afternoon as the Norse take on Florida Gulf Coast at the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
