GAYHEART THE BRAVEHEART: Freshman guard
Rianna Gayheart scored 19 of her career-high 24 points in the second half Saturday to lead NKU to a 70-62 victory over South Carolina Upstate. Gayheart came off the bench to finish 7-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-8 from behind the arc to help the Norse capture their first A-Sun win.
Her six 3-point field goals fell just shy of NKU's single-game record of eight, set by Shannon Roddy on Feb. 1, 1997, against Lewis. Gayheart also knocked down a pair of crucial 3-pointers after USC Upstate had sliced a 16-point NKU lead to four (54-50) with 5:59 remaining. The freshman drilled a triple to extend NKU's advantage to 57-50, and she capped a 14-4 Norse run by knocking down another 3-pointer to give her team a 68-54 cushion.
Gayheart is No. 2 in the A-Sun in 3-point shooting (.439) and is No. 10 in 3-pointers made per game (1.5). She averages 6.8 points per game.
INSIDE THE PAINT: Sophomore post player
Kaitlyn Gerrety posted her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against USC Upstate. She has now scored in double figures five times this season and averages 6.5 points per game.
DOSS IT OUTSIDE: Sophomore forward
Melody Doss finished with 14 points, eight rebound and three assists against USC Upstate. She made a pair of 3-pointers as NKU knocked down a total of 10 treys as a team. The 14 points and eight boards both tied a career high for Doss, who averages 5.1 points per game.
BANK ON IT: The NKU women are now 55-8 all-time in The Bank of Kentucky Center, including 3-1 this season.
