VERONA, Wis. – The Northern Kentucky University men's golf team posted a 14th-place finish at the 2013 Badger Invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, on Tuesday.
NKU finished the three-day event with a total score of 924 after turning in rounds of 310-311-303 at the par-72 University Ridge Golf Course.
South Carolina put together a commanding performance as a team to capture the title. The Gamecocks finished with an 8-under-par 856 on rounds of 282-283-291, and they topped second-place Kansas (290-294-296 880) by 24 strokes.
Clayton Portz led the Norse with a three-round total of 225 after carding rounds of 76-72-77, and he finished tied for 29th place. Corey Richmond and Zach Wright followed with a share of 61st place and a total of 235. Richmond shot rounds of 79-82-74, while Wright turned in scores of 81-80-74.
Michael Schmidt finished one stroke behind Richmond and Wright after shooting rounds of 74-84-78 for a total score of 236 and tied for 65th. Jacob Brinker rounded out the team scoring for NKU with a 246 (83-77-86) and a share of 71st place.
South Carolina's Caleb Sturgeon won the individual medal after finishing the event with a 10-under-par 206 total behind rounds of 65-72-69. He bested his teammate, Matthew NeSmith, by six strokes. NeSmith recorded rounds of 72-67-73 for a three-day total of 212.
The Norse return to action Oct. 7-8 as they participate in the Bearcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati, at Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Ky.
