HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Sophomore goalie
Tanner Ruberg collected five saves Saturday night as the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team played visiting Lipscomb to a scoreless draw.
Ruberg made a pair of game-saving stops in the second half against Lipscomb, including one that prevented high-scoring Ellen Lundy (13 goals going into Saturday) from tallying a marker. Northern Kentucky is now 4-10-2 overall, 0-6-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match," Norse head coach
Bob Sheehan said. "They have a young lady (Lundy) that has been having a really nice season in terms of scoring a lot of goals, so I thought we did a good job of minimizing her opportunities, and we defended well as a unit.
"They have a lot of young players like we do that are getting some results. We created some good chances, and we just have to stay positive and finish the season strong."
The Norse are 1-0-1 all-time against Lipscomb, which is 5-6-5 overall this season and 2-2-3 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. A year ago in Nashville, Northern Kentucky posted a 5-2 win against Lipcomb.
Lipscomb goalie Anna Buhigas turned away seven Northern Kentucky shots in 110 minutes of action. The Norse finished with a 23-14 advantage in total shot attempts and both teams earned nine corner kicks.
The Norse play host to USC Upstate at 7 p.m. Friday. Northern Kentucky then closes out the season Oct. 27 with a noon contest against East Tennessee State at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
"We are going to try to finish the season on a positive note," Sheehan said. "We have two more games, and we are just going to try to keep working hard and finish strong."
