HEBRON, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University's Corey Richmond led the men's golf team to its best finish of the 2013-14 season as the Norse tied for eighth place at the Bearcat Invitational on Tuesday.
Richmond finished 4-over-par with a two-day total of 220 at the par-72 Traditions Golf Course. He fired rounds of 75-72-73 to finish the three-round event tied for 13th place with four other competitors: Cincinnati's Blake Hamilton (74-76-70), Eastern Kentucky's Garrett Hinton (73-76-71), Youngstown State's Brandon Pluchinsky (72-72-76) and Austin Peay's Austin Kramer (71-70-79).
Clayton Portz and Matthew Wetherill finished one stroke behind with a 221 total and a share of 18th place. Portz carded rounds of 74-76-71, while Wetherill shot rounds of 72-73-76. Phoenix Ramsey turned in a three-round total of 231 (78-78-75) and tied for 57th place, and Tanner Walton rounded out the team score with rounds of 81-80-80 and a 241 total, finishing in 78th place.
Marshall's Brian Anania captured the individual medal after shooting a 6-under-par 210 after carding rounds of 72-70-68. He finished one stroke ahead of Tennessee Tech's Mitchell Thomas (68-71-72 211) and Cincinnati's Baxter Reeves (70-73-68 211), who tied for second place.
As a team, NKU finished the tournament with a two-day total of 893. The Norse carded rounds of 299-299-295 to improve their position after each round.
Austin Peay captured the team title for the third consecutive season with a team total of 862 (285-288-289). For the second year in a row, the Governors entered the final round in second place but shot 289 to move past Marshall, which finished second after shooting rounds of 287-284-296 for a total of 867.
NKU will return to action Oct. 13-15 when the Norse participate in the Dayton Flyer Invitational at the NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.
