HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky renews an old rivalry with Chattanooga in The Bank of Kentucky Center at noon Sunday. Northern Kentucky and Chattanooga have not played since 1977, when both programs competed at the NCAA Division II level.

The Norse own a 1-7 record entering Sunday's game, while Chattanooga is 4-6 overall. The Mocs posted an 86-68 win over Hiwassee on Tuesday night as Z. Mason scored 41 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Mason was 16-for-20 from the field and buried a trio of 3-pointers for Chattanooga.

RIVALRY RENEWED: Chattanooga reclassified to NCAA Division I status after winning the Division II national championship in 1977 and the series with Northern Kentucky was discontinued.

Prior to that, Northern Kentucky and Chattanooga played 10 times, with the Mocs winning seven of those games. The two programs met for the first time on Nov. 27, 1972, with Chattanooga being the opponent for the opening of Regents Hall. The Mocs pulled out that first game in Regents Hall, 84-80, over Northern Kentucky.

Jeff Stowers scored 21 points to lead Northern Kentucky in that first meeting with Chattanooga. Steve Meier added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Norse.

Walt McGary led Chattanooga with 26 points and 12 rebounds, the first double-double in Regents Hall history.

The Norse's last win against Chattanooga came on Feb. 7, 1977, an 88-76 triumph in Regents Hall. That is also the most recent meeting between the two programs. Northern Kentucky is 3-2 all-time at home against Chattanooga, and 0-5 on the road.

SKYHAWKS SPURT: Tennessee Martin used a pair of big second-half runs to pull out a 79-66 win over NKU on Dec. 7. The Skyhawks used a game-ending 14-3 run in the final two minutes to secure the win. Todd Johnson's tip-in had brought NKU within a basket (65-63) with 2:23 remaining, but Tennessee Martin countered with its decisive spurt.

Earlier in the second half, the Skyhawks erased a 59-55 deficit by scoring the next 10 points to take a 65-59 lead.

CONFERENCE LEADERS: NKU sophomore forward Jack Flournoy continues to lead the Atlantic Sun Conference in 3-point shooting at 51.6 percent. Flournoy is shooting 16-for-31 from long range and averages 7.5 points per game. He buried four 3-pointers against Tennessee Martin on Dec. 7 and finished with 14 points in that game.

NKU junior guard Jordan Jackson leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in steals at 1.7 per game. He is seventh in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Norse sophomore post player Jalen Billups is second in the conference in field-goal percentage at .628.

NKU leads the Atlantic Sun Conference in 3-pointers made per game, averaging 8.0 treys per contest.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE: Norse sophomore guard Todd Johnson collected his second career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds at Tennessee Martin on Dec. 7. Johnson began the season by scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds at Purdue.

THIS TIME LAST YEAR: After eight games last season, NKU owned a 2-6 record in its inaugural year of Division I competition. The Norse lost their first six games but defeated both Hampton and Navy on the road just before the Christmas break.

The Norse play host to both of those opponents next week to conclude their three-game homestand. Hampton visits The Bank of Kentucky Center on Dec. 18, while Navy plays at NKU on Dec. 21.

SUNDAY'S PROMOTION: Coney Island vouchers will be accepted for free admission on Sunday.
