NAVY VISITS NKU: Northern Kentucky closes out its pre-Christmas portion of the schedule Saturday at noon when Navy visits The Bank of Kentucky Center. The Norse own a two-game winning streak and are 3-7 overall. Navy enters Saturday with a 5-4 record.
LAST-SECOND HEROICS: Jordan Jackson buried a 17-foot jumper with 0.9 seconds remaining in overtime to give Northern Kentucky a 69-67 win over Hampton on Wednesday. Jackson, who was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday, scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Norse.
Jackson leads the Norse in scoring at 14.8 points per game. He is also shooting 55.1 percent from the field, which is eighth in the conference. Jackson is second in the conference with an average of 1.9 steals per game.
BENCH STRENGTH: Norse reserves
Jake Giesler and
Jack Flournoy combined for 29 points, seven rebounds and 12-for-20 shooting from the field to key the comeback against Hampton.
Gielser finished with a career-high 16 points - all after halftime and grabbed five rebounds. Flournoy added 13 points, including a trio of 3-point field goals. The Norse bench owned a 32-23 scoring edge over Hampton. In addition,
Daniel Camps came off the bench and grabbed five rebounds for the Norse.
EXTRA SESSIONS: Northern Kentucky is now 48-35 all-time in overtime games. The Norse have won their last six home overtime games dating back to 2004.
FROM LONG RANGE: Jack Flournoy continues to lead the Atlantic Sun Conference in 3-point shooting at 50 percent. Flournoy is shooting 19-for-38 from long range and averages 7.3 points per game.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST NAVY: On Dec. 22, 2012, Stretch Watson poured in a career-high 19 points as Northern Kentucky posted a 55-46 victory over Navy in Annapolis, Md.
Watson's heroics included his own personal 11-0 run in the second half – a jumper and three consecutive 3-pointers – that turned a 38-37 Navy lead into a 48-38 NKU advantage with 4:57 left in the game.
Watson also grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots. NKU's
Jalen Billups was a force inside with 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
SATURDAY'S PROMOTION: Saturday will also be Military Appreciation Day, presented by the Kentucky National Guard. Active, retired, and former members of the military receive free admission, while their guests will be given $1 admission to the game.
In addition, Lieutenant Commander John Hiltz, a native of Fort Mitchell, Ky., and a member of the Blue Angels, will be in attendance. Hiltz, a Covington Catholic High School graduate, and Staff Sergeant Landon Bentley of the Kentucky National Guard will both be sitting on the NKU bench serving as Hometown Heroes and honorary guest coaches. Bentley is from Maysville, Ky., and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
UP NEXT: Northern Kentucky will visit Chapel Hill, N.C., to meet nationally ranked North Carolina on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. That game will also be televised nationally on ESPNU.
The Norse then begin Atlantic Sun Conference play on Dec. 30 with a road game against Florida Gulf Coast at 7:05 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla. NKU concludes the road trip Jan. 1 with a 7 p.m. contest against Stetson in DeLand, Fla.
