Lamar defeats NKU baseball, 14-4

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 14-4 victory in seven innings over Northern Kentucky University on Sunday afternoon at Vincent Beck Stadium.

After spotting Lamar a 2-0 advantage, NKU (0-4) cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1 in the top of the second when Bradley Vanderglas singled to center field and Quint Heady scored.

Lamar (4-0) scored twice in the bottom of the inning to stretch its lead to 4-1.

Heady started the fourth inning off for the Norse with a single to center field and advanced third base on groundouts by Pat Hyde and Vanderglas.  Heady scored his second run of the day on a single by Ryan LeFevers, and the Cardinals took a 4-2 advantage into the bottom half of the inning.

Lamar's hot bats continued to sizzle in the bottom half of the inning.  The Cardinals began the inning with back-to-back singles by Sam Bumpers and V.J. Bunner.  After a sacrifice bunt by Jude Vidrine, Darian Johnson drew awalk to load the bases.  Mike Nastold walked Brad Picha, allowing Bumpers to score the first Lamar run of the inning.

After Aric Harris was brought in to replace Nastold on the mound, Seth Dornak flew out to Brett Cisper in foul territory, followed by a single to center field by Aaron Olivas that brought Bunner and Vidrine home giving Lamar a 7-2 lead.

The Norse added two runs over the next three innings, but the Cardinals used a six-run bottom of the seventh to end the game and remain perfect on the season.

Heady went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Norse.

Olivas finished 3-for-3, collected two RBIs and scored a run for Lamar, while Johnson added five RBIs and two runs after going 3-for-4 on the day.

Chase Angelle (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings of work to earn his first victory of the season.
