CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Northern Kentucky University men's track and field team shined in relay competitions, setting a pair of new school records at the Cedarville Collegiate Open this past weekend.
Overall, the Norse took a seventh-place result in the team event, amassing 51 points as the host Yellow Jackets cruised to victory with a total of 155.5 points.
J.J. Webber, Brendan Chwalek, and Zac Holtkamp led the Norse relay teams in the 4x400-meter relay and distance medley relay.
The three teamed up with Tyler Mowrey to make a rare appearance in the 4x400-meter. They placed second, running a 3:42.47. Mowrey was the most experienced runner in the 4X4, having just ran the event last weekend at the SPIRE Midwest Open.
Josh Makin combined with Webber, Chwalek, and Holtkamp in the DMR to post his best time in the event with a 10:39.62. The effort was good enough for a first place finish.
Jason Zavislak may have found his new niche when he posted a 5.98 meters (19-7.5) in the long jump, knocking off an NKU record that had stood since 1995. It was his first time posting a mark in the long jump in a meet and he placed third in the event. He also ran his first 200-meter dash this season, crossing in 25.65 seconds.
Josh Miller also set a new Norse mark, posting a 9.99 meter (32-9.5) distance in the weight throw.
Matt Kuhn ran his first 5000-meter race and he ended with a seventh-place finish of 16:02.48, while Matt Kincaid posted his best time of the season in the mile with a 4:34.77. Kincaid was the Norse's top finisher in the mile, placing seventh.
The Norse will compete at the Indiana University in the Hoosier Hills Invitational next weekend in the team's final tune-up leading to the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championships at the end of February.
