HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team used a 5-2 victory over Jacksonville University at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex to capture its first Atlantic Sun Conference series of the season on Sunday afternoon.
Zach Houck began the game with a triple down the right-field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Dillard to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
A four-run second inning put the Norse on top for good.
With one out,
Logan Spurlin singled through the left side, and
Pat Hyde followed with a walk. A wild pitch by Jeff Tanner advanced Spurlin and Hyde a base.
Bradley Vanderglas lined a 3-2 pitch towards second baseman Jake Huxtable, but the ball hit the ground and Huxtable bobbled it allowing Vanderglas to reach base. Spurlin headed towards home on the error and scored, tying the game at 1-all.
After a pop out, Myers doubled to right center to score Hyde, then Vanderglas and Myers scored on a single by
Zac Asman to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Norse extended the lead in the third when Vanderglas sent another 3-2 pitch down the right-field line to score
Cody Kuzniczci, who reached base on a double to start the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Dillard doubled and scored on a Nathan Koslowski single, but a double play ended the Dolphins' threat.
Blake Bagshaw (1-7) earned his first victory of the season with the second consecutive complete game performance by an NKU pitcher. He only surrendered two runs on five hits, and Bagshaw recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Asman and
Ryan Hinz led the Norse offense, going 2-for-4. Asman stole three bases in the game's first two innings. The last time an NKU player stole three bases was April 22, 2012 when
Max Colaner accomplished the feat against Saint Joseph's (Ind.).
Five different Dolphins recorded hits on the day. Wes Torrez pitched five solid innings of relief for Jacksonville. Torrez did not allow a run and scattered just two hits, while collecting one strikeout.
NKU improved to 8-31 on the season and 3-12 in the conference with the win, while Jacksonville fell to 14-25 overall and 7-8 in the A-Sun.
The Norse return to action on Wednesday in Indianapolis against Butler after the game for Tuesday against former Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Saint Joseph's (Ind.) was canceled. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats and broadcast information will be available at NKUNorse.com.
