Week 2 Game Notes | Atlantic Sun Weekly Release
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team travels to Indianapolis on Wednesday night to meet Butler in a non-conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
NKU is 0-1-1 after playing Murray State to a scoreless tie on Sunday in Highland Heights, Ky. Norse netkeeper Tanner Ruberg stopped 13 Murray State shots, including a pair of outstanding saves during the first eight minutes of the contest that denied the Racers two potential goals.
For her performance, Ruberg was honored Monday as the Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week. It marked the first time an NKU women's soccer player has earned the weekly honor from the Atlantic Sun Conference. She is the first player to receive conference weekly honors since Amanda Mason was tabbed as the GLVC Player of the Week on Oct. 10, 2011.
The 5-foot-8 goalie, whose 0.45 goals against average is tied for third in the conference, is a sophomore from Fairfield, Ohio, and an organizational leadership major.
ABOUT BUTLER: Butler enters Wednesday night with a 1-1 record after posting a 3-0 win over Indiana State on Sunday. The Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision at Louisville in their season-opening contest on Aug. 23.
This will mark the first meeting between NKU and Butler in women's soccer. The Bulldogs, who posted a 12-5-4 record last season, compete in the Big East Conference. Butler was 7-1-3 at home a year ago.
AGAINST THE BIG EAST: NKU is 0-1 all-time against current teams in the Big East Conference. A year ago, Xavier pulled out a 1-0 overtime win against the Norse in Highland Heights, Ky. The Musketeers were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference last season.
NEARING 260: NKU head coach Bob Sheehan owns a career record of 258-65-19 with the Norse. Sheehan began the program in 1997 and is in his 17th season on the NKU sideline. He led NKU to an unprecedented seven Great Lakes Valley Conference championship when the Norse competed at the NCAA Division II level. Sheehan also guided NKU to three consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II Final Four from 1999-2001.
In addition, Sheehan's team reached the 20-win mark four consecutive years (1999-2002) while establishing itself as one of the nation's top Division II programs.
TENNESSEE TECH NEXT: NKU returns home to meet Tennessee Tech at noon Sunday. The Norse then hit the road next Friday to meet Morehead State at 7 p.m. in Morehead, Ky.
