HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team puts its three-game winning streak on the line Friday night with a road contest at Oakland (Mich.). The kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Norse return home Sunday to meet Youngstown State at noon at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
Northern Kentucky is 3-2-1 after posting a 6-1 win over Canisius on Sunday. Six players netted goals for the Norse, who have put together a three-game winning streak for the first time as a Division I program.
The six goals were the most scored by Northern Kentucky since beginning play as a Division I program. The Norse also established a Division I-era mark by scoring four goals in the first half and coasted to the non-conference win against the Golden Griffins.
Megan Frye, Sami Rutowski, Allison Ponzer, Martha Staab, Chrissy Spears and Aubrey Muench scored goals for the Norse.
OFFENSIVE HISTORY: While in Division II, Northern Kentucky's biggest offensive output took place on Sept. 9, 2001, when the Norse rolled to a 12-0 win at Wheeling Jesuit. The six goals scored Sunday were the most by Northern Kentucky since a 7-1 victory over Saint Joseph's (Ind.) on Oct. 7, 2011.
STREAKING: During its three-game winning streak, Northern Kentucky has outscored the opposition 9-2. The Norse pulled out one-goal victories over Tennessee Tech (1-0) and Morehead State (2-1) before the triumph over Canisius.
ABOUT OAKLAND: The Grizzlies are 2-3-1 overall after posting a 2-0 win over Western Michigan on Sunday. Oakland goalie Payj O'Shea collected six saves and the shutout against Western Michigan.
Oakland's three losses have all come against nationally ranked teams – then-No. 19 Michigan, then-No. 7 Notre Dame and then-No. 20 Marquette.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST OAKLAND: On Sept. 14, 2012, Oakland posted a 2-0 win over Northern Kentucky in Highland Heights, Ky. Meghan Reynolds and Kyla Kellerman each scored goals for the Grizzlies, who owned a 2-0 halftime lead.
Oakland owns a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series with Northern Kentucky.
ABOUT YOUNGSTOWN STATE: The Penguins are currently 1-3-1 and meet both Robert Morris and Ohio this week before playing at Northern Kentucky. Youngstown State and the Norse have a common opponent, Canisius. The Penguins dropped a 1-0 decision at Canisius earlier this season.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST YOUNGSTOWN STATE: On Sept. 16, 2012, Sara Smith's goal in the 73rd minute gave Northern Kentucky 2-1 win at Youngstown State. Kelsey Laumann also added a goal for the Norse, who are 1-0 all-time against the Penguins.
SUNDAY PROMOTIONS: The Sunday Funday Bingo will again be played during the game with the winner receiving an NKU t-shirt and a Toppers Pizza coupon. Sunday will also be Camper Appreciation Day and kids wearing camp t-shirts receive free admission, with parents and guests receiving $1 admission.
In addition, Sunday is Junior Norse Day, and all kids 14-and-under receive free admission. Player and coaches will sign autographs on the field after the game.
