HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Katelyn Newton's goal in the second half snapped a 2-all tie and lifted the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Youngstown State on Sunday.
Northern Kentucky (4-3-1) owned a 2-1 halftime lead on the strength of goals by Sami Rutowski and Casey McMillan, but Youngstown State (1-6-1) countered in the 56th minute when Cara Armstrong found a loose ball near the goal line and finished with a marker to even the score at 2-all.
Newton gave Northern Kentucky the lead at the 62:04 mark by sending a 17-yard shot from out front past Youngstown State goalie Katie Montgomery into the back of the net.
Northern Kentucky defended a pair of final shots from Youngstown State in the closing minutes and improved to 2-0 all-time against the Penguins. The Norse owned a 22-9 advantage in shots, including 8-3 on goal. Northern Kentucky also had 10 corner kicks, compared to six for Youngstown State.
McMillan also collected two assists on the day for the Norse, who play at Xavier on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
