Lipscomb volleyball defeats NKU in three sets

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Lipscomb parlayed strong serving and an efficient offense Wednesday night to sweep past Northern Kentucky in the Atlantic Sun Conference volleyball opener for both teams.

Jewell Dobson collected 14 kills and hit .385 as Lipscomb posted a 25-23, 25-19, 25-22 win over homestanding Northern Kentucky in Regents Hall. The Lady Bisons attacked at a .330 clip for the match and improved to 7-3 overall, 1-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Molly Spitznagle added 11 kills and hit .429 for Lipscomb, which departed Regents Hall with a victory for the second straight season.  The Lady Bisons pulled out a five-set thriller against the Norse a year ago in Regents Hall.

Lipscomb's serving kept the Norse off balance, and the Lady Bisons finished with seven aces. Three of those aces were in the third set as Lipscomb held on to earn the key road victory.

Entering the match, Lipscomb was No. 1 in the nation in kills per set at 16.07. The Lady Bisons finished with 49 kills in the three sets against Northern Kentucky and owned a 54-41 advantage in digs.

Jenna Ruble and Jayden Julian each finished with nine kills for Northern Kentucky, which fell to 4-6 overall, 0-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Ruble also attacked at a .364 clip.

Megan Wanstrath added eight kills for the Norse, who hit .248 as a team. Anna Prickel recorded 12 digs to lead the Northern Kentucky defense.

Lipscomb setter Caitlin Dotson, who entered Wednesday's match second nationally in assists per set at 12.76, dished out 43 assists against Northern Kentucky.

The Norse meet Florida International at 4 p.m. Friday in West Lafayette, Ind., as part of the Purdue Invitational. Northern Kentucky takes on No. 21 Purdue at noon Saturday, followed by a match against Syracuse at 5 p.m.
