HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team faces a busy weekend of action that kicks off Friday with a road contest at Morehead State at 6 p.m.
The Northern Kentucky/Morehead State game can be seen on the Ohio Valley Conference Digital Network. The Norse enter Friday's contest with a 1-2-1 record, while Morehead State is 0-3-1 after dropping a 2-0 decision at West Virginia on Sunday.
The Norse close out the weekend Sunday at noon by playing host to Canisius. The Golden Griffons are 1-3-1 and play host to Detroit on Friday before visiting Northern Kentucky.
Northern Kentucky is 2-0 all-time against Morehead State, and the Norse own a 1-0 lead in the series with Canisius.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST MOREHEAD STATE: On Sept. 15, 1999, Kristen Noakes sent a 30-yard shot into the back of the net in the first overtime as Northern Kentucky posted a 2-1 at Morehead State. Betsy Moore netted a first-half goal for the Norse, who advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four that season.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST CANISIUS: On Aug. 17, 2012, Marta Staab and Kelsey Laumann each scored goals as Northern Kentucky began its inaugural season of Division I competition with a 2-0 win over Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y.
That victory over Canisius was the first for any Norse athletic team as a Division I program.
WINNING MOMENT: Allison Ponzer netted a goal in the 84th minute to give Northern Kentucky a 1-0 victory over Tennessee Tech on Sunday afternoon. Megan Frye started the play with a perfect pass into the box, where Ponzer tapped the ball past Tennessee Tech goalie Jordan Brown into the back of the net. It was the first goal of the season for the Norse, who outshot the Golden Eagles by a 24-10 margin.
Ponzer, a senior from Simon Kenton High School, scored her first goal since the 2011 season with the winning marker on Sunday. A year ago, she finished with a team-leading six assists.
IN THE NET: Norse goalie Tanner Ruberg collected three saves and earned her second shutout of the season during Northern Kentucky's win over Tennessee Tech. Ruberg lowered her goals against average to 0.95 and has 23 saves this season.
NEARING 260: Northern Kentucky head coach Bob Sheehan owns a career record of 259-66-19 with the Norse. Sheehan began the program in 1997 and is in his 17th season on the NKU sideline. He led NKU to an unprecedented seven Great Lakes Valley Conference championship when the Norse competed at the NCAA Division II level. Sheehan also guided NKU to three consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II Final Four from 1999-2001.
In addition, Sheehan's team reached the 20-win mark four consecutive years (1999-2002) while establishing itself as one of the nation's top Division II programs.
SUNDAY'S PROMOTIONS: The Sunday Funday Bingo will once again be played during the game with the winner receiving an NKU t-shirt and a Toppers Pizza coupon. In addition, Sunday will also be Campbell County Appreciation Day. All Campbell County residents will receive $1 admission for with proof of residency.
