MOREHEAD, Ky. – Ariel Fischer's golden goal in the 98th minute lifted the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Morehead State on Friday night at Jayne Stadium.
Senior Megan Frye set up the game-winning play with a corner kick, which junior Abbey Scherer served into the box. Freshman Sami Rutowski headed the ball towards the goal, but goalkeeper Kaitlynn Murphy made a diving save. Fischer rushed to the ball as it bounced off Murphy, and she found the back of the net for the NKU win.
The goal was the first for Fischer, a sophomore from Loveland, Ohio, as a Norse.
Freshman Katelyn Newton opened the scoring for the Norse in the 19th minute with her first collegiate goal. Following a hand ball foul by Morehead State, Newton took a quick tap pass from Frye and sent a shot by goalkeeper Hannah Seeman, who played the first half before being replaced by Murphy, from 13 yards out.
The Eagles evened the game in the 70th minute. After the Norse defense cleared the ball out of the box, it bounced around between both teams in front of the goal until Jade Flory gained control and sent the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
"Going into the match, we knew it was going to be a challenge," NKU head coach Bob Sheehan said. "Morehead State has played two very tough teams in Ohio State and West Virginia, and they played both of them very close, so we knew it was going to be a difficult game. It was a very physical game in a tough place to play, but our girls played well and got the win."
Morehead State finished with a 12-10 edge in shot attempts but could not take advantage of its six corner kick opportunities.
Sophomore Tanner Ruberg stood strong in goal for the Norse. She finished with four saves on the night to increase her season total to 27.
With the win, Sheehan collected his 260th career victory. He owns an all-time record of 260-66-19 and is in his 17th season with the Norse.
NKU improved to 2-2-1 with the win, while Morehead State dropped to 0-4-1. The Norse now hold a 3-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two schools.
The Norse welcome Canisius to the NKU Soccer Stadium on Sunday at noon. Sunday Funday Bingo will be played during the contest with the winner receiving an NKU t-shirt and Toppers Pizza coupon. All Campbell County residents will get into the game for just $1 with proof of residency as well.
