LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kari Weinland's goal in the 17th minute was the only offense the University of Louisville women's soccer team needed to defeat Northern Kentucky University, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Lynn Stadium in nonconference action.
Erin Yenney set up the scoring play with back-to-back corner kicks. Yenney's first opportunity was deflected by the NKU defense, but her second found the head of Weinland. Weinland directed the ball towards the net and past Norse goalkeeper
Brooke Schocker for a 1-0 Louisville lead, which stood until the end of the game.
NKU, which fell to 5-7-3 overall, found its two best scoring chance in the second half. In the
Macy Hamblin created a shot opportunities at the 57:44 mark and in 68th minute, but Louisville goalkeeper Paige Brown made the saves to ensure the one-goal lead for the Cardinals.
"When we scheduled this match, we thought it was going to be great opportunity for our team to be able to compete against an [Atlantic Coast Conference] program," NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan said. "The ACC is the best women's soccer in the conference in country, so it was good for us to get the experience of facing a team from the top league. And, we felt like we represented ourselves well tonight against good competition.
"I thought we were hesitant early, but we settled down in second the second half. We started moving the ball better, and we started to create a rhythm. I feel like this was a good confidence builder to have this type of experience against a team from the top conference in the country."
Kaela Dickerman led the offense for Louisville, which improved to 6-6-2 on the year, with five shot attempts, three of which were on goal. Weinland and Yenney each placed two of their three shots on target, while four Cardinal players took two shots. Brown finished with two saves in goal for Louisville.
The Louisville offense pressured the NKU defense early and often in the first half, holding a 12-0 advantage in shot attempts. The Cardinals ended the game with a 21-4 edge in shots and an 18-1 margin in corner kick chances.
Hamblin recorded three of NKU's four shots on the day. Her first shot of the night sailed over the goal and out of bounds before Brown recorded her two saves of the night on Hamblin's last two attempts.
Sami Rutowski's shot in the 62nd minute went wide of the Louisville goal. Schocker surrendered the game's lone goal but upped her season saves total to 44 with nine stops on the night.

Prior to the game, NKU will honor
CG Bryant and
Abbey Scherer for their contributions to the program. It will also be Local County Night, where fans will receive $3 admission with proof of residency in Boone, Campbell and Kenton County. In addition, it will be Norse Junior and Camper Reunion Night, where kids 12 and under will receive free admission.
The Bank of Kentucky Center will host an event on Oct. 18 at 7:30 pm. With this event conflicting with the NKU women's soccer game going on at the same time, there are some parking changes and recommendations for getting to the NKU Soccer Complex:
--Fans are encouraged to arrive early between 6-6:30 p.m. in order to avoid the traffic congestion that will increase as the 7:30 p.m. event approaches at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
--Parking for soccer will be located in two areas on campus. Soccer spectators will be able to park in the Welcome Center Garage on campus for $10 per vehicle. There will also be a $4 per vehicle fee in Lot T, which is a bit further away from the NKU Soccer Complex. Spectators can choose either lot for the soccer match that evening.
