NKU golfers finish sixth at The Grover Page Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University men's golf team posted a sixth-place finish at The Grover Page Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee Martin and played at the par-72 Jackson Country Club, on Tuesday.

NKU, which began the final round in fifth place, finished the two-day event with a total score of 896 after turning in rounds of 294-303-299.

Atlantic Sun Conference counterpart Lipscomb earned the team title after shooting rounds of 285-282-289 for a total of 856.  The Bisons defeated second-place Tennessee Tech (290-280-293 863), which began just three strokes behind, by seven strokes.

Corey Richmond was the top finisher for the Norse, carding rounds of 70-75-71 for a three-round total of 216 and a share of sixth place.  Clayton Portz followed with a 222 on individual scores of 72-77-73 to tie for 22nd, while Michael Schmidt finished six strokes back with a 228 total to tie for 39th place.  He added rounds 76-74-78 to the Norse total.

Landon Osborne and Matt Wetherill rounded out NKU's team score.  Osborne turned in rounds of 76-77-77 for a two-day total of 230 and a share of 46th place in his first event competing for NKU.  Wetherill finished 51st with a total score of 233 on rounds of 77-78-78.

Lipscomb's Caston Roberts, who began the day in second place, used a final round score of 71 to go along with his 70-68 from the first day of the event for a 7-under par 209 total to capture the individual medal.  He finished five strokes ahead of teammate Sydney Chung and Union's Bryce Doughty, who tied for second with a three-round total of 214.  Chung turned in rounds of 71-72-71, while Doughty shot rounds of 72-70-72.

NKU returns to the links March 16-18 as the Norse participate in the Grub Mart Intercollegiate, hosted by Jacksonville State, at the Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.  Last season, NKU finished tied for ninth place at the same event, led by Steve Rickels' 26th-place finish.
