Complete resultsLEXINGTON, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University men's golf team posted an eighth-place finish at the UK Bluegrass Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky, on Sunday at the par-72 University Club.
NKU turned in rounds of 288-300-308 for a total of 896. Kentucky took the team title with a 12-under-par score of 852 on rounds of 280-283-289. The Wildcats bested second-place Auburn by four strokes, as the Tigers shot rounds of 282-285-289 for a two-day total of 856 on the Big Blue Course.
The Norse finished three strokes better than Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb, which was ninth. The Bisons completed the three-round event with a two-day total of 899 after carding rounds of 295-300-304.
Michael Schmidt led the Norse with a share of 12th place behind rounds of 71-72-75 for a three-round, 2-over-par total score of 218.
Corey Richmond followed with a score of 223 on rounds of 73-73-77, and he tied for 21st place.
Zach Wright and
Landon Osborne turned in identical 228 totals as they tied for 45th. Wright turned in rounds of 75-77-76, while Osborne shot rounds of 69-78-81.
Clayton Portz rounded out the team scoring for NKU as he shot rounds of 81-83-80 for a two-day total of 244. He tied for 76th place.
Auburn's Matt Gilchrest took the individual title behind rounds of 68-68-71 for a 9-under-par 207 total. He finished four strokes ahead of teammate Niclas Carlsson and Kentucky's Ben Stow, both of whom finished with a 211 total in second place. Carlsson shot rounds of 68-69-74, and Stow recorded rounds of 69-70-72.
NKU will close out the 2013-14 season, its second competing at the NCAA Division I level, next week as the Norse participate in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The season-ending event will take place in Brasleton, Ga., at the Legends at Chateauelan April 20-22.
