Complete resultsJACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Northern Kentucky University men's golf team placed seventh at the rain-shortened Grub Mart Intercollegiate, which wrapped up play on Tuesday.
The event, which was played at the par-72 Silver Lakes Golf Course, was originally scheduled to include 56 holes with two-round occurring on Monday, but a three-hour delay cut the Grub Mart Intercollegiate to just 36 holes.
As a team, NKU turned in rounds of 300-311 for a two-day total of 611. Host Jacksonville State captured the overall victory for the tournament after shooting rounds of 291-289 and a total of 580. The Gamecocks topped second-place Columbus State by 14 strokes as the Cougars finished the event with a total score of 594 on rounds of 299-295.
For the Norse, three individuals placed within the top 20, including
Zach Wright and
Michael Schmidt, who were competing as an individual, and
Corey Richmond. Wright's share of eighth place is a personal best on the season, as he posted scores of 75-70 for a total of 145. Richmond, who finished tied for 15th, was just four strokes off from Wright and carded scores of 72-77 to total 149. Rounding out the top 20 individual scorers was Schmidt with a 150 total (74-76), and he finished tied for 20th.
Other contributors to the NKU team scored included
Clayton Portz, who fell just short of landing within the top 20. Portz recorded scores of 74-78 for a 152 total, his second-best finish on the season. Matt Wetherill and
Tanner Walton both posted identical scores of 155, both shooting rounds of 77-78. Rounding out the scoring for the Norse was
Phoenix Ramsey, who finished tied 49th, with scores of 79-81 to total 160 over the two-round event.
Jacksonville State's Franco Grillo placed first overall after posting scores of 68-69 for a tournament-best 7-under-par 137 total score. Chattanooga entered several golfers competing as individuals, and two finished in second and third place. Zac Stolz and Benni Weilguni posted scores of 67-71 (138) and 69-72 (141), respectively.
The Norse will look to improve on the season as they travel to Lexington, Ky., on April 12 to compete in the Bluegrass Invitational, their last tournament before heading to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. The conference championship will take place in Braselton, Ga., at The Legends at Chateau Elan course April 20-22.
