Game 2 box score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Angelo Amendolare's single in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Jacksonville University baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Northern Kentucky University to complete the doubleheader sweep after cruising to an 8-2 win in the opener at John Sessions Stadium in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Friday.
Scott Schaub drew a walk to lead off the inning for Jacksonville, and Dylan Dillard's single sent him to second base. Cameron Gibson followed with a single to right field, and Schaub scored to bring the Dolphins to within one (6-5).
Braddock Rowe was hit by a hit pitch to load the bases with no outs, but
Kyle Colletta recorded back-to-back strikeouts for NKU before Amendolare sent a 1-1 shot into left-center field to bring home Dillard and Gibson for the win.
After NKU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the second inning, Jacksonville rallied with three runs in the fifth inning and one in the six to take a 4-3 lead heading into the top of the eighth.
Zac Asman's single through the left side sparked the Norse offense in the eighth, and he went to second on a
Cody Kuzniczci ground out.
Logan Spurlin then sent the first pitch he saw into left field, and Asman came home to tie the game for the second time.
Over the next three innings, both teams let opportunities slip by. NKU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 10th but could not bring home the go-ahead run. Connor Marabell flew into a double play in the bottom of the 11th frame as Nick Ricci was thrown out at home on the play to end the Jacksonville threat.
The Norse, however, struck first in the final inning.
Cole Bauml started off the 12th for NKU with a single to left field, and he went to second on an Asman single to right. A Justin Lawrence wild pitch advanced both runners a base before Kuzniczci was intentionally walked for the second time in the extra frames to load the bases.
Lawrence's second wild pitch of the inning allowed Bauml to score the go-ahead run, and Kuzniczci added an extra run on a
Jordan Procyshen sacrifice fly, setting the stage for Amendolare's game-winning hit.
Amendolare sparked the Jacksonville offense in the nightcap, going 3-for-6 from the plate with three RBIs, while four Dolphins recorded two-hit games. Lawrence (1-1) earned the victory on the mound after pitching one inning and allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits.
Asman finished 4-for-5 to lead the NKU offense, and he batted in one run and scored once. Bauml went 3-for-5 with one double, one stolen base and one run scored.
Alex Bolia pitched six innings of relief for the Norse, giving up two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts, while Colletta (1-5) took the loss after surrendering two runs on three hits.
Jacksonville took advantage of four NKU errors in the opener for the victory. In both the third and eighth innings, the Dolphins scored three runs on two hits and one error, and they added single runs in the bottom of the first and sixth.
NKU scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth frame. Asman doubled to lead off the inning for the Norse before Bauml followed with a double to bring Asman home. Spurlin singled to left field, advancing Bauml to third.
Procyshen then reached base on a fielder's choice, which saw Spurlin out on the play, and Bauml scored the final NKU run of the opener.
Jacksonville outhit the Norse in the opener by an 11-5 margin with Marabell's 3-for-4 effort leading the way, and he batted in two runs and scored once. Alex McRae (5-7) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two batters in 5.1 innings of work in the win for the Dolphins.
Cody Cooper (3-9) took the loss in the opener, giving up eight runs, only one earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Jacksonville improved to 19-31 overall and 12-13 in the Atlantic Sun, while NKU fell to 14-36 on the year and 6-20 in the conference. With the doubleheader sweep, the Dolphins now hold a 3-2 lead in the all-time series between the two teams.
NKU will conclude its season on Saturday as the Norse and Jacksonville wrap up the three-game series from John Sessions Stadium at 2 p.m. Links to live stats and John Asalon's audio broadcast will be available at nkunorse.com.
