Box score (PDF)FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's soccer team scored five goals in the second half to lift the Mastodons to a 6-4 victory over Northern Kentucky University on Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
IPFW (1-2) had five different players record its six goals, led by Kallianne Mogler's two goals and one assist. The five goals in the second half helped the Mastodons overcome a 2-1 deficit at the halftime break.
NKU (1-1-1) pressured the IPFW defense early and often in the first half, outshooting the Mastodons 13-4 in the opening stanza. The Norse placed nine of their shot attempts on goal in the first 45 minutes.
Macy Hamblin's third goal of the season for NKU opened the day's scoring in the 28th minute. She took a pass from
Kelsey Laumann and sent her shot by a diving IPFW goalkeeper Sam Pavlika into the center of the net to give the Norse a 1-0 lead.
IPFW wasted little time answering the NKU goal. Less than three minutes later, Mogler sent a corner kick into the goal area, and Gaby Romo headed the ball by Norse goalkeeper
Tanner Ruberg and into the left side of the goal at the 30:02 mark.
NKU capitalized on a corner kick opportunity of its own at the other end of the field.
Jaclyn Elmore kicked the ball into the penalty box, and
Katelyn Newton gained control of the ball and found the back of the net for her first goal of the 2014 season, and the 2-1 score would stand until the end of the half.
The second Mastodon goal of the day came less than one minute into the second half. Rachel Good's shot was just out of Ruberg reach and tied the game at 2-all before IPFW took the lead for good in the 61st minute. Taylor Pavlika headed Victoria Pepper's cross into the back of the net to give the Mastodons a 3-2 advantage over the Norse.
Lindsey Swope extended the Mastodon advantage to 4-2 in the 70th minute, just before the Norse put another goal on the scoreboard. After the clock was stopped for an injury,
Hanna Pateryn sent the ball into the goal area on the restart, and
Elizabeth Wittwer netted her first career goal to cut the NKU deficit to 4-3.
In the 74th minute, IPFW's Mogler and NKU's
Morgan Shafer each scored goals for their respective teams, giving IPFW a 5-4 lead. Three minutes later, Mogler collected her second goal of the game for the final margin of the game.
"We congratulate IPFW on the win today," NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan said. "Their players made more plays than we did today, and we need to get better at that. Our goal is continue to work hard and get better both individually and collectively. We need to make more plays than the other team, be more accountable and stay focused the whole time."
The Norse finished with a 21-13 advantage in shot attempts, despite being outshot in the second half, 9-8, and put 13 of their chances on goal. Hamblin led the NKU offense with one goal and seven shot opportunities, and she placed six of her attempts on target.
Ruberg allowed four goals and collected four saves in goal for NKU, while Sam Pavlika made nine saves and gave up four goals for IPFW.
Kelly Neumann surrendered two goals in her first appearance of the season for the Norse, and
Brooke Schocker spent the final 10 minutes of the game in goal for NKU.
The win marked the first for the Mastodons in the all-time series with the Norse, but NKU still owns a 2-1 lead.
NKU returns to action on Friday as the Norse travel to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Kickoff from Michael A. Carroll Stadium is set for 6 p.m. Links to live stats will be available at NKUNorse.com.
