INDIANAPOLIS – Stacie Volker's first-half goal lifted the Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over IUPUI at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Friday night.

With 25 seconds left in the opening stanza, Volker put the Norse on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season, and it was all the offense the Norse needed to improve to 2-1-1 on the season.  Hanna Pateryn sent a corner kick into the goal area, and Volker's first shot attempt was blocked by the IUPUI defense.  Volker then regained control of the ball, sending a shot from four yards out by IUPUI goalkeeper Nicole Kulovitz.

"We were really proud of our team tonight," NKU head coach Bob Sheehan said.  "We really paid attention to the details, and we are very pleased that it paid off for the team.  We are very happy for Stacie on her game-winning goal off the corner kick at the end of the first half.

"It was definitely a complete game effort tonight from our starters and the players off the bench.  Everyone made a difference in the game tonight.  I am very proud of the effort the team put forth in training this week, and it paid off with a win tonight."

Kelsey Laumann and Maria Silbersack attempted to add an insurance goal for the Norse, each placing shots on target in the second half, but Kulovitz secured the ball to keep the 1-0 NKU lead intact.  The Jaguars offense put strong pressure the Norse defense over the final 10 minutes of the game but only placed one of their four shots on goal.

Volker and Laumann led the NKU offense with four shot attempts on the night.  The Norse placed five shots on goal, paced by Laumann's three.  NKU recorded seven corner kicks on the night and was able to capitalize on its first-half chance.

IUPUI (1-4-1) outshot NKU by a 20-14 margin, and the Norse successfully defended each of the Jaguars' four corner kick opportunities.  Krissy Kirkhoff and Catherine Raster put each of their total seven shots on target.

NKU goalkeepers Tanner Ruberg and Brooke Schocker combined for seven of the team's eight saves on the game, while Kulovitz allowed one goal and made four saves.

The Norse return to the NKU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday as NKU welcomes Xavier at 7 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to break out their gold apparel on Tuesday as part of NKU's Gold Rush.  The first 100 students in attendance will receive a free gold bandana, and it will also be student-athlete and jersey night, where kids will receive free admission when they come to the game wearing their soccer club uniform.
