EMERSON, Ga. –
Caleb Lonkard spread four hits across two games, but William & Mary found answers in a pair of extra-inning games to sweep a doubleheader on Sunday at the Perfect Game Baseball Complex at LakePoint Sports.
Lonkard joined
Cole Bauml and
Logan Spurlin in posting two-hit performances, but Charley Gould's two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning was the difference in a 6-4 loss in the opener. In the nightcap, Devin White was able to swim around a tag after a Cullen Large single to score the walk-off run in a 5-4 win.
The Norse (2-8) combined for 10 hits in each game, adding another two-hit game from Lonkard to the efforts of
Trey Ganns and
David Head, who each posted doubles in the nightcap contest as well.
The teams traded runs over the first two innings of the opener, beginning with Gould's RBI single through the left side in the top of the first inning, scoring Willie Shaw, who doubled to the gap in right-center with one out. Bauml matched the feat with a one-out double in the bottom of the frame, his 11th of the season to lead the nation, reaching third on the play.
Cody Kuzniczci brought Bauml home on a single to left field.
Large hit the first of three consecutive singles through the right side in the top of the second inning for William & Mary (4-2), bringing in Zach Newell, who started things with a one-out double. Shaw followed up with a single as did Ryan Hissey before Norse right fielder
Quint Heady came up throwing, gunning down Large at the plate to end the Tribe rally.
The Norse got the run back when
Caleb Lonkard singled, stole second and came around to score on a Heady double, leveling the game at 2-2.
Ryan Hall gave the Tribe a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning with a solo home run to left field on a 1-0 pitch. Gould added to the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single up the middle that spelled the end of the day for NKU starter
Jake Shaw.
Evan Korson settled things down very well for the Norse on the mound from that point, recording 15 consecutive outs, including five strikeouts, in a strong relief appearance.
The Norse got back in the game in the seventh beginning with Lonkard's first career home run over the left-field fence to lead off the inning. Bauml followed suit with his first of the season to right field to tie the game up.
Gould's third hit of the day proved to be the deciding factor in the 10th inning as he sent a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center to set the final score. The Norse got a base runner in the bottom half of the frame on a Spurlin infield single, but a ground out and a strikeout ended the game.
The win went to Tribe reliever Robert White, who tossed 2.2 innings of shutout baseball, collecting two strikeouts along the way. Korson (1-1) took the loss despite the strong outing, surrendering just two runs and two hits in six innings of work.
Jake Shaw gave up four runs on 10 hits and picked up two strikeouts over four innings in the start.
Ganns got the Norse on the board in their first trip to the plate in Game 2, ripping an RBI-double down the left-field line to plate Bauml, who struck out but reached base on a wild pitch earlier in the inning.
A pair of walks from
Tyler Miller haunted the Norse in the bottom of the second as Gould scored on a sacrifice fly from Matthew Tilley and Tim Hoehn touched the plate during an inning-ending rundown to make it a 2-1 game.
Gould came through for another RBI for the Tribe in the third with an RBI single to score Willie Shaw and extend the lead to 3-1, which held until the fifth when Bauml roped a two-out RBI-double to left-center to score Lonkard, who singled and stole second with one out to set up the scoring play.
Large got the run back for William & Mary in the bottom of the fifth, just missing a home run to left center with a two-bagger that hit the middle of the wall. Large moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error later in the inning.
The Norse again came back to tie things up late, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth. Spurlin led things off with a double to the wall in left field before Ganns followed up with an infield single and Head moved both to scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
Ryan LeFevers brought the first run in on a sacrifice fly before
Kyle Colletta tied things up with an RBI-single up the middle to score
Anthony Vagnier, who came on to run for Ganns.
William & Mary threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with nobody out before
Cody Cooper, making his 59th career appearance to rank ninth all-time at NKU, picked up a pair of key strikeouts against Large and Willie Shaw and induced a groundout from Hissey to keep the score tied.
Cooper kept the Norse in it, striking out five batters overall and helping to force extra innings for the second time of the day before the Tribe found the answer in the eighth inning. Devin White led off by reaching on a throwing error and reached second on a sacrifice bunt before Large laced a single through the right side. Heady's throw in from right field went up the line and White was able to swim around the tag and touch the plate for the walk-off winner.
The Norse pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts on the game, including five each from Miller and Cooper. Ganns and
Aric Harris combined for three more strikeouts over a combined inning of effort. Cooper took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season.
The win went to Charlie Fletcher, his first on the year, after a pair of scoreless innings. Mitchell Aker added a five-strikeout performance in the start for William & Mary.
The Norse head west once again next weekend when they travel to New Mexico State for a three-game series. The teams will play a single game on Friday before closing out with a doubleheader on Saturday. For the latest on Norse baseball, follow @NKUNorseBSB on Twitter.
