Creamer, Julian strong as VB falls at Xavier

CINCINNATI – Jayden Julian and Keely Creamer each had nine kills for the Northern Kentucky University volleyball team in a 3-0 loss to Xavier at Cintas Center on Friday to close out Day 1 of the 2015 season.

Xavier (1-0) took the match with set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-8. NKU, now 0-2 on the season, also dropped a 3-0 match to Eastern Michigan earlier in the day.

Taylor Snyder picked up her second double-double of the year for NKU with 24 assists and a team-best 12 digs. Abbey Bessler and Kristen Massa each had 12 kills to pace the Musketeers offensively, while Mackenzi Humm and McKena Estes each added three service aces.

After keeping the score level in the early going, the Norse edged out a three-point lead at 12-9, but three kills from Makayla Agin gave the Musketeers the lead at 15-14. Xavier held on to the lead the rest of the way to take a 25-21 win.

The second set was a story of dueling runs. After a 5-1 run put Xavier up, 14-11, the Norse stormed back with four of their own to make it a 15-14 NKU lead. Xavier responded with four in a row before the Norse rattled off an 8-2 run to take a 22-20 edge. The Musketeers buckled down and got the final five points of the set to take a 2-0 lead on the match.

Xavier kept the pressure on, opening Set 3 on a 10-1 run and never trailing, taking the match with a 25-8 decision.

The Norse will close out the season-opening weekend on Saturday with a noon first serve against Cincinnati at Fifth Third Arena.
