CHICAGO – In just his second collegiate appearance, freshman goalkeeper
Owen Betz recorded an NKU Division I program record 11 saves for the Northern Kentucky men's soccer team, but the Norse fell to Horizon League foe UIC, 4-0, on Saturday at Flames Field.
With the result, NKU dips to 0-9-2 overall including 0-4-0 in the Horizon League while UIC improves to 4-5-1 (2-1-0 Horizon).
Between the Posts
- Betz saw 77:18 minutes in goal before Dezmond Thompson stepped in for the final 12:42 minutes of play.
- The duo faced a combined 28 shots from an aggressive UIC offense.
- The Flames' Andrew Putna made a pair of saves in his full 90 minutes of action.
First Half Summary
- Betz was busy early, recording a trio of saves between the 11th and 15th minutes en route to his season-high mark.
- Campbell Morris was the only Norse to place a shot on goal in the opening stanza.
- Alwin Komolong, Nick Perez and Kobie Qualah also put up shot attempts, but UIC took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute.
- Gonzalo Romo scored for the Flames on an assist from Oscar Gonzalez. Gonzalez dribbled down the ride side of the offensive third, dishing it into the box for Romo to fire from 12 yards out.
Second Half Summary
- UIC extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal from Jose Fuentes in the 60th minute. Fuentes scored on a rebounded shot deflection following a Flames corner kick.
- A 68th-minute header goal from Kyle Hamann off a corner kick followed by an unassisted goal from Max Todd just one minute later handed UIC its victory.
- Qualah put a shot on goal in the 86th minute looking to spoil the shutout bid, but UIC goalkeeper Putna came up with the save.
- Diego Martinez fired another attempt with less than a minute to play to give NKU its seventh and final attempt of the match.
Norse Notes
- Betz came four saves shy of tying NKU's program record 15 saves set by Scott Dunajcik in 1985.
- NKU's seven shots were split among six different players. Qualah posted a team-high two shots, one on goal.
