Three-run ninth leads baseball over ETSU, 3-2

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team plated three runs on four hits and one error in the ninth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and defeat East Tennessee State, 3-2, in the series opener at Thomas Stadium on Friday evening.

Junior Kyle Colletta led off the top of the ninth with a double to left-center to ignite the NKU bats. Catcher Jake Hickey followed with a single that advanced Colletta to third, setting him up to score NKU's first run of the game on a passed ball.

Logan Spurlin then clubbed an RBI double to plate Hickey and tie the game at two runs apiece. A Conor Ledger single and ETSU error combined to push Spurlin across the plate for the game-winning run.

Senior Alex Bolia stepped to the mound in the bottom of the ninth and sat the Buccaneers down in order to seal NKU's first win of the season and earn his first career save.

Charlie Jerger (1-0) picked up his first win as a Norse after striking out his only batter faced to strand a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the eighth. Jerger relieved Pierce Knisley who twirled 2.2 scoreless innings.

NKU (1-4) scattered 12 hits across eight different batters as Ledger, Hickey, Quint Heady and Will Haueter each posted multi-hit games. The Norse clubbed four doubles and out-hit ETSU, 12-8.

NKU starter Justin Watts battled through a pitchers' duel across the first four innings until the Buccaneers (1-3) plated both of their runs in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Cook sent a two-out, two-run triple to right-center to break a scoreless tie.

The Norse and Buccaneers face off in game two on Saturday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at ETSU's Thomas Stadium.
