Chattanooga tops @NKUNorseSB to close Frost Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Dani Devlin hit her first home run of the 2016 season for the Northern Kentucky University softball team, but it wasn't enough to overcome a six-run first inning by Chattanooga, which took an 8-2 win over the Norse to close out play on Day 3 of the Frost Classic.

Zahrya McFarland added a triple and a run scored for NKU, which fell to 1-9 on the season. Alina Maher added a single on the day as well, as the Norse totaled three hits in the contest.

Back-to-back bunts to lead off the bottom of the first inning put two runners on for Chattanooga (11-5) and set up Jordan Fortel's RBI-double to the gap in right-center field to open the scoring. The Mocs proceeded to load the bases before picking up a pair of two-run singles from Jesslyn Stockard and Sam Taylor to round out the scoring in the frame.

Another RBI-single from Stockard and a double-play groundout to score a run in the second inning expanded the lead to 8-0 for Chattanooga. NKU pitcher Charlie Nolen settled things down from there, allowing just two hits the rest of the way.

McFarland's triple led off the top of the fourth inning for the Norse and allowed NKU to get on the board immediately, as the freshman scored on a wild pitch to break up the shutout bid. Devlin's bomb to dead center field led off the seventh inning, and completed the scoring for the Norse.

Chattanooga had four different players claim two-hit games, including Sam Taylor, Alyssa Taylor, Fortel and Stockard.

Kailey Palazzolo (4-2) went the distance for the Mocs in the win, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out four. Ashlynn Roberts took the loss for NKU, falling to 0-4 on the year.

The Norse return home for practice before heading out for an eight-day, 12-game swing through Florida over Spring Break. The trip begins on Saturday, March 5, when the Norse compete in the Under Armour Invitational, hosted by USF. The Norse will take on IPFW, St. Bonaventure and Villanova in the weekend event.
