@NKUNorseSB falls to Villanova in Sunday morning matchup

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Alina Maher clubbed her team-leading fourth home run of the season for the Northern Kentucky University softball team, but a three-run fifth gave Villanova a 3-2 come-from-behind victory on Sunday morning to conclude the Under Armour Invitational.

Maher claimed one of NKU's three hits on the game as the Norse fell to 3-10 on the season, while Villanova improved to 9-7.

Maher's blast came with one out in the second inning and opened the scoring on the day. The Norse added another run in the third inning after Nicolette Hayes reached base on an error to lead off and promptly stole second. The senior second baseman came home on Zahrya McFarland's RBI-single to make it a 2-0 game.

Villanova's comeback came in the fifth inning. Shea Palmer opened things up with a leadoff triple and scored on an RBI single by Sierra McConnell. After Lauren Herschberg's sacrifice put two in scoring position, Dana Morris brought them in with a two-run double to take the lead.

Maher's leadoff walk in the seventh inning represented the tying run. Kara Meter sacrificed her to second base, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the threat and the game.

Herschberg, Palmer and Chase Snell each had two hits as the Wildcats combined for nine on the morning. The win went to Kate Poppe (6-5), who gave up one hit while walking two and striking out seven in four innings of relief work.

The loss fell to Charlie Nolen (2-4) after giving up three runs on six hits.

After a day off on Monday, the Norse return to action on Tuesday in a neutral-site doubleheader against Wagner. First pitch from Clearwater is set for noon.
