CLEVELAND – Dani Devlin and Kara Meter each posted two-hit games to help the Northern Kentucky University softball team take a 4-3 win over Cleveland State to open a Horizon League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The twinbill ended in a split, as Cleveland State took the nightcap, 11-0. With the results, NKU moves to 10-35 overall and 3-14 in Horizon League play.
Game 1
Seven different players picked up base hits for the Norse, who combined for 10 knocks in the game. Devlin and Zahrya McFarland claimed doubles on the day, while Meter added a triple to her line.
The Norse got their scoring done in the third inning, getting the rally started on McFarland's one-out double. The freshman advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on Devlin's RBI double. Jordan Harbacek, getting the start in the circle, helped her own cause with an RBI single to center field.
Harbacek would come around to score on a batted ball from Alina Maher that was ruled an error by the Cleveland State centerfielder. Meter closed out the scoring with a two-out RBI single to score Maher and make it a 4-0 lead.
The Norse pitcher was strong through six innings until home runs from Alyson Broschk and Alisha Silva in the bottom of the seventh closed the gap to 4-3. Head coach Kathryn Gleason went to the bullpen and called upon Ashlynn Roberts, who got the final two outs to pick up her first collegiate save.
Harbacek (6-12) gave up six hits and struck out four in the win. The loss fell to CSU's Mackenzie Joecken (3-7), who gave up three runs on eight hits and struck out one in 5.2 innings.
Game 2
The Vikings struck early and often in the nightcap, posting runs in each of their four times at bat to score 11 runs on 11 hits in the contest.
Maher extended her hitting streak to three games with a single in the contest. Harbacek, Meter and Paige McQueen claimed base hits as well.
The loss fell to Charlie Nolen (4-15) for the Norse, who struck out two and gave up five runs, only two earned, in 1.2 innings in the start.
The Norse now return to the Frank Ignatius Grein Softball Field for a five-game home stand to close out the home half of the 2016 season. The action begins on Tuesday when the Norse step out of League play for the final time to take on IUPUI for a twin bill. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
