Sutton, Newton lead WSOC over Oakland, 2-1

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – After Oakland scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute on Wednesday evening, the Northern Kentucky women's soccer team fired back with a pair of goals within a two minute span from Katelyn Newton and Erin Sutton to notch a 2-1 victory over the defending Horizon League champions.

"I thought our defense played exceptionally well. They really limited opportunities. Taylor [Spaulding], Sami [Rutowski] and Chrissy [Spears] did a phenomenal job, while Katelyn, Rachel [Conaway], Hannah [Fischer] and Samantha [Duwel] really defended well in the midfield," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "It's a team effort and I think overall we are defending really well and continuing to evolve."

With the win, NKU improves to 6-5-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Horizon League. Oakland dips to 4-7-1 and 1-2-0 in League play.

  • Just two minutes later, Hamblin posted her second assist of the game, connecting with Shawna Zaken, who one-touched it to Erin Sutton for the goal. Hamblin's assist came from the far right wing, in the box to Zaken who dished it across to Sutton on the close left wing for the game-winner.
