Strong first half helps @NKUNorseWSOC defeat Green Bay

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team scored three goals in the first half to defeat Green Bay by a final score of 3-1. With the win, NKU improves to 8-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the League. Green Bay drops to 2-10-1 and 1-4-1 in the Horizon League.

"We are always pleased to earn three points," said NKU head coach Bob Sheehan. "We defended well as a team throughout the match, and the quality of our service and finishing in the first half was fantastic today."
 
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
  • Macy Hamblin gave the Norse the lead in the eighth minute. A cross played in by Ally Perkins from the left side found Hamblin, and she was able to head the ball to the left lower corner of the net. Jessica Frey also earned an assist on the play.
  • Frey added to the lead in the 17th minute. Payton Naylor played a cross on the ground, Frey secured it, and fired a shot to the right lower corner. Hamblin was also credited with an assist.
  • Hamblin added her second goal of the match in the 33rd minute. Shawna Zaken passed the ball to Hamblin in the middle of the box, and she beat the Green Bay goalkeeper to give the Norse a 3-1 advantage.
 
BETWEEN THE POSTS
  • Emily Lohmann made two saves on the afternoon, and her record improves to 8-3-1.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Hamblin put the Norse ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute.
  • Lohmann made a great save in the 11th minute to keep Green Bay out of the scoring column early in the match.
  • Frey put the Norse ahead 2-0 in the 17th minute.
  • Green Bay got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute. A clear by the NKU defense was deflected and went to Alex Zeller, who was able to beat Lohmann to make the score 2-1.
  • Hamblin gave the Norse a 3-1 lead in the 33rd minute.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Frey nearly scored her second goal of the match in the 52nd minute. Perkins played a cross into the box, and Frey's attempt was just wide of the frame.
  • In the 62nd minute, Frey looked like she got another goal, but she was called offside.
  • Erin Sutton had a great opportunity to score in the 70th minute, but her chip shot was just to the left of the goal.
  • Lohmann made another fine save in the 73rd minute to prevent Zeller from scoring again.
  • NKU's final scoring chance of the match came in the 75th minute. Frey had a shot on goal, but the Green Bay goalkeeper did well to keep the ball out of the net.
MATCH NOTES
  • The Norse are unbeaten in the past six matches and 5-0-1 in the Horizon League.
  • Frey scored her 10th goal of the year, and Hamblin now has eight.
  • This was NKU's first home match since Sept. 27 against Wright State.
  • The match was part of NKU's Think Pink Games for the American Cancer Society.

  • The Norse travel to Oakland on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
