@NKUNorseWBB falls in heartbreaker to Austin Peay, 53-52

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team fell to Austin Peay on Tuesday evening by a final score of 53-52. The Governors hit a shot with 3.9 seconds left in the contest to get the victory and extend their winning streak to seven games. NKU sits at 1-6 on the season, while Austin Peay advances to 7-1.

 

STAT LEADERS

  • Molly Glick led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting and brought down six rebounds.
  • Kailey Coffey added 16 points, a new career best, and a team-best eight rebounds. Six of her points came from the charity stripe with a flawless free throw performance.
  • Laura Thomas played a career-high 29 minutes and finished with five points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds.

 

FIRST HALF SUMMARY

  • Glick scored 11 points in the first quarter for the Norse, but Austin Peay was able to take a 15-13 advantage into the second quarter courtesy of a 75.0 shooting percentage.
  • Austin Peay outscored NKU 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 30-19 advantage into halftime.
  • The Norse shot 7-of-22 (31.8%) in the half, while the Governors went 11-of-20 (55.0%) on field goals.
  • NKU out-rebounded Austin Peay 16-9 in the half, which included seven offensive boards for the Norse.
  • The Governors' Falon Baker was the leading scorer in the half with 14 points on 5-of-8 (62.5%) shooting.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY

  • The Norse picked up the intensity in the third quarter, and went on a 10-0 run to take a 41-38 lead with 47 seconds left in the period. Coffey had eight points in the quarter for NKU.
  • NKU and Austin Peay were tied 42-42 at the end of the third quarter.
  • Things were fairly even in the fourth quarter, as neither team led by more than two points.
  • With the score tied 48-48, Laura Thomas converted two free throws to give the Norse a 50-48 lead.
  • Austin Peay responded with a three-point play to take a 51-50 advantage, but Samari Mowbray's layup put the Norse ahead 52-51 with 30 seconds to play.
  • Baker made a tough shot with 3.9 seconds to give Austin Peay a 53-52 lead, after which NKU called timeout to draw up a play. The Norse had an open look in the closing seconds, but the shot just missed as time expired.
  • The Norse shot 13-of-22 (59.0%) in the half, and held the Governors to just 10-of-31 (32.3%) shooting.

NORSE NOTES

  •  NKU finished the game 20-of-43 (46.5%) from the floor, while Austin Peay shot 21-of-51 (41.2%).
  • The Norse outrebounded the Governors 31-24.
  • NKU forced 16 turnovers thanks in part to seven steals.
  • The Norse had a good showing at the free throw line, finishing the game 9-of-10 (90%) from the charity stripe.
  • NKU held the advantage in the paint with 28 points down low, compared to 20 for APSU. However, the Governors converted 21 Norse turnovers in 19 points.
  • After the Governors shot 60.0 percent from long range in the first half with six triples, NKU held Austin Peay scoreless from 3-point range for the remainder of the contest.
  • The Norse assisted on 14-of-20 field goals. Behind Thomas' five, Grace White added three dimes to her stat line, while Taryn Taugher and Mikayla Terry had two apiece.
