Dayton and ULM top @NKUNorseSB

ATHENS, Ga. – Northern Kentucky softball fell in its two games of the second day of the Georgia Classic, with a 13-6 loss to Dayton before a 1-0 setback to Louisiana-Monroe. The Norse fall to 0-4 on the season, while Dayton advanced to 6-2 and ULM moved on to 6-4.

Game 1: Dayton 13, NKU 6

At the Plate
  • Junior third baseman Sydney Ferrante went 2-of-5 in leadoff, driving in one run for the Norse.
  • Freshman second baseman Toree Stalter was 1-of-1 at the dish with one run and one RBI, also drawing two walks from Dayton's pitchers.
  • Also registering RBI for NKU were freshman centerfielder Ava Lawson and senior utility player Paige McQueen.

In the Circle
  • McQueen started in the circle for the second-straight game, pitching 2.1 innings.
  • Freshman Taylor Ginther took control in the fourth inning, hurling the final three frames for the Norse while surrendering just three hits and one run with no walks.

Key Moments
  • Dayton had a much quicker start than the day prior, plating three runs in the first inning. The Norse retaliated with three of their own, taking advantage of Lawson drawing a walk with the bases loaded to send Brummell home, followed by Stalter being hit by pitch with bases loaded with McQueen getting the score.
  • The Flyers had an immense fourth inning with six runs, giving Dayton a 12-3 advantage going into the bottom of the frame. The Norse were able to prevent a run ruling with one run in the fourth, followed by Lawson scoring on a passed ball in the fifth.
  • NKU trailed 12-5 with Ferrante at the plate with a full count when the game had to be halted due to rain. After two and a half hours of delay, the game resumed and the Norse were able to get Stalter home for the final NKU run of the contest.

Norse Notes
  • The all-time series between NKU and Dayton is now knotted up at 12-12. Yesterday's meeting was the first time the two teams had squared off since the 1996 season.

Game 2: ULM 1, NKU 0

At the Plate
  • Junior third baseman Sydney Ferrante was the only Norse to record a hit, going 1-of-3 from the plate.
  • Senior utility Paige McQueen was able to reach base twice, once on a hit by pitch and once by drawing a walk.

In the Circle
  • Junior Ashlynn Roberts pitched the full 7.0 innings for the Norse, with three strikeouts. Roberts' record dips to 4-24 for her career.

Key Moments
  • Due to the rain delay in NKU's first game, the tilt against ULM slated for 5:30 started three hours later.
  • ULM took advantage of an error in the first inning, with Cheyanne Lyon reaching home plate for the Warhawks' lone run of the contest.
  • The Norse allowed a hit in every inning except the final frame, while NKU was able to muster its first hit in the bottom of the fifth when Ferrante doubled down the left line.

Norse Notes
  • The Warhawks have won both meetings against the Norse in a series that started last season.
  • The two games played had vastly different offensive outputs, with the series opener featuring 24 runs between the teams as ULM edged out NKU on Feb. 19, 14-10.

Up Next
  • The Norse conclude the Georgia Classic tomorrow morning with another game against ULM. First pitch against the Warhawks is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
