HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky women's basketball got back in the win column on Thursday night, taking down Horizon League opponent UIC, 66-49. With the win, the Norse sweep the regular season series with the Flames and advance to 8-16 on the season and 4-8 in League play. UIC dips to 4-20 (1-12 HL) with the loss.
Stat Leaders
- Junior forward Kasey Uetrecht led the team in scoring with 20 points, her fourth 20-point performance of the season. Uetrecht was also the offensive key in taking down UIC in the first showing of the year, knocking down a season-high 24 points on Jan. 22.
- Junior guard Mikayla Terry recorded the second double-double of her career with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She also dished out three assists to tie Uetrecht for the team lead. Terry had an efficient outing, going 2-of-2 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
- Senior guard Kelley Wiegman added 14 points, while freshman guard Hannah Clark was one off her career best with eight points.
First Half Summary
- The Norse got out to a relatively slow start, allowing UIC to at one point hold a 12-11 lead. NKU tied it up and went on to take the lead for good off a Uetrecht 3-pointer for the 15-12 lead.
- After being tied at 12-12, NKU ended the first half by outscoring the Flames, 24-6, including a 12-0 run that held UIC scoreless for nearly four minutes of play in the second quarter.
- Uetrecht led the Norse in scoring with 13 points, going 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Wiegman knocked down a pair of triples for the majority of her eight first-half points, while Terry had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.
- NKU shot 37.5 percent in the first half, but upped its efficiency in the second stanza to post a .625 clip. The Norse also managed to make 12 trips to the free throw line, converting on 10 for an 83.3 percentage.
Second Half Summary
- UIC was able to cut the deficit to single digits after outscoring the Norse 13-4 at the start of the third quarter, culminating in back-to-back triples by Brittany Byrd.
- NKU retaliated with a 7-0 run, but the Flames were able to get back within striking reach by the end of the third period with the Norse leading 48-37.
- The second half mirrored the first in terms of shooting percentage, with NKU going 4-of-11 from the field in the third quarter before finishing the game off with a 6-of-8 effort in the fourth.
- UIC outscored NKU in the third, 19-12, but the Norse strung together an 18-12 fourth quarter to seal the win.
Norse Notes
- NKU has not lost a contest with the Flames in the history of the two programs, holding a 4-0 record all-time.
- The Norse committed 13 turnovers against a team that ranks second in the League with 18 forced turnovers a game. Conversely, NKU forced 17 miscues from the Flames that were converted into 22 points.
- NKU also held the edge in second-chance points 11-4, but UIC was the bigger force down low. The Flames outrebounded NKU, 28-27, and scored more than half their points in the paint with a 32-24 edge.
- The team shot 21-of-43 from the field for 48.8 percent and was also 40.0 percent from 3-point range with six triples made. NKU is 5-1 this season when sinking at least six treys in a contest.
