HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over UIC. The match was the Horizon League opener for both teams. With the win, NKU improves to 4-4-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Horizon League. UIC drops to 2-7-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in League play.
"Our team stayed with the game, defended well, and scored two quality goals," said NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan. "We are happy to earn the three points in our first Horizon League match."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
- Macy Hamblin put NKU ahead in the 49th minute. Ally Perkins dribbled down the left side and played a cross on the ground to Hamblin, who was able to strike her ball to the left upper corner to give the Norse a 1-0 advantage.
- NKU doubled its lead in the 58th minute. A corner kick played by Perkins found Emily Soltes, who headed the ball over to Samantha Duwel on the left side of the box. Duwel beat the UIC keeper near post to help NKU to the 2-0 victory.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Emily Lohmann faced 14 shots on the night, but she was only forced to make three saves. Her record improves to 4-3-0.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Early in the match, the Norse had three shots within the first three minutes but couldn't put an attempt on goal.
- In the eighth minute, Macy Hamblin secured a bouncing ball near the penalty spot, but her shot went high.
- Hamblin had another chance to score in the 17th minute. A ball cleared by the UIC defense went straight to Hamblin, and she fired a shot from more than 20 yards out. However, her attempt went left of the frame.
- UIC's first scoring chance came in the 22nd minute. Haley Kittle hit a powerful attempt from outside the box, and the ball ricocheted off the crossbar.
- The Flames' Naomi Rushe took a shot in the 23rd minute that went to the left of the goal. Emily Lohmann touched it away to be safe, and it resulted in a UIC corner kick.
- In the 28th minute, UIC's Keri Birkenhead fired a shot from distance, but Lohmann made the save.
- NKU's Shawna Zaken made a nice pass to Hamblin in the box in the 35th minute. However, Hamblin's attempt went over the net.
- Hamblin recorded the Norse's first shot on goal in the 40th minute. She brought down the ball to her feet in the box, and hit a shot with the outside of her foot, which was secured by UIC goalkeeper Tara Khayam.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- NKU amped up its offensive pressure in the early moments of the second half. The Norse were finally rewarded on Hamblin's goal in the 49th minute.
- Less than 10 minutes later, NKU doubled its lead on Duwel's goal.
- UIC's Emily Valentine fired a shot from distance in the 68th minute, but Lohmann made the save to prevent the visitors from getting on the scoreboard.
- Valentine's shot was the only attempt on frame for UIC in the second half.
- Hamblin tried to score her second goal of the match in the 86th minute, but her header attempt was saved by the UIC goalkeeper.
- In the 88th minute, UIC's Naomi Rushe had a great chance to score. Rushe got behind the NKU defense, fired a shot, but it appeared to be blocked by a NKU defender. However, the official whistled for a goal kick to end the scoring threat.
MATCH NOTES
- NKU's win snaps a three-match losing streak.
- Hamblin's goal was her third of the season, while Duwel recorded her first.
- The Norse had 15 shots, which was one more attempt than UIC had in the match.
