HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team earned its third straight win and second shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Wright State on Wednesday evening. With the win, NKU improves to 6-4-0 overall and 3-0-0 in League play. The Raiders are now 7-5-0 and 2-1-0 in the Horizon League.
"We are very pleased to earn three points in a 1-0 win over Wright State," said NKU head coach
Bob Sheehan. "Our team defended well, and we created some quality chances. That was as professional of a win as we've had all season."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
- Jessica Frey put the Norse ahead in the 75th minute. Kailey Ivins played a cross on the ground from the right side to Frey. She was able to shield a WSU defender and fire a shot to the left lower corner to give NKU the 1-0 advantage.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Emily Lohmann made three saves on the night, and her record is now 6-3-0. She has recorded two shutouts on the season.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- In the fourth minute, Frey had open space in the box, but she pushed her shot to the right.
- Emily Lohmann made her first save of the night in the 20th minute.
- Macy Hamblin put a shot on goal in the 26th minute. She fired an attempt from just outside the box, but the WSU goalkeeper made a diving stop to prevent the shot from going into the back of the net.
- The Norse were awarded a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Emily Soltes stepped up to take the kick, but her shot rattled off of the right post.
- Frey found another opening in the Raider defense in the 33rd minute, but her attempt was just high of the frame.
- In the 42nd minute, Hamblin nearly scored a spectacular goal. A ball was played to her at the top of the box, she flicked it up to herself and sent a hard-struck volley over the net.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Early in the second half, Shawna Zaken fired a shot from the right side, but the WSU defense was able to block the attempt.
- In the 54th minute, the Raiders had a great scoring chance. WSU's Liv Raflik sent a shot to the left side of the frame, but Lohmann made a great diving save to punch the ball out for a corner kick.
- WSU played a few dangerous passes into the box midway through the half, but the NKU defense held strong and prevented the visitors from scoring.
- Jordyne Helinski took a hard shot in the 68th minute, but Lohmann was able to make another fine save.
- Frey scored the lone goal of the match in the 75th minute.
- The Norse had a final opportunity to score in the 81st minute, but Frey's attempt was blocked out of bounds, which resulted in a corner kick.
MATCH NOTES
- The Norse had a 17-11 advantage in shots.
- NKU recorded seven corner kicks in the match, compared to six for the Raiders.
- This was the third straight win for the Norse.
