No. 24 Cincinnati defeats @NKUNorseWSOC in Riverboat Rivalry

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The No. 24 Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the Northern Kentucky women's soccer team, 1-0, in the Riverboat Rivalry at NKU Soccer Stadium. The Bearcats were ranked in the latest Top Drawer Soccer Poll. With the win, UC moves to 5-0-1, while NKU falls to 3-3-0.

"Neil has done a great job with the UC program, and they are having a great season," said NKU head coach Bob Sheehan. "We demonstrated a spirit and resiliency throughout the match that we can be proud of.  We have shown continued improvement, and we look for our team to continue to evolve."

BETWEEN THE POSTS
  • Emily Lohmann faced 26 shots, making nine saves on the evening. Her record slides to 3-2-0.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • In the first five minutes, Jessica Frey and Macy Hamblin made a couple of long runs, but the UC defense was able to prevent the ball from getting into a dangerous area.
  • UC was able to put a good amount of pressure on the Norse defense through the first half, as NKU's Lohmann was forced to make six saves in the opening stanza.
  • Hamblin had the Norse's first opportunity to score in the match. In the 39th minute she fired a shot, but it was saved by UC's Madison Less.
  • A few moments later, the Bearcats scored the only goal of the match. Sophie Gorman dribbled the ball into the box and beat Lohmann from 10 yards out to give UC the 1-0 advantage.
  • In the first period, UC had 16 shots with seven being on frame.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • UC continued to apply pressure in the second half. The Bearcats took 10 shots in the period, but only three managed to go on target.
  • NKU also created more chances in the half. Hamblin took a shot on goal in the 48th minute, but Less made the save for UC to keep the Norse out of the scoring column.
  • Later in the half, Payton Naylor recorded a shot on goal in the 76th minute.
  • The Norse's final attempt of the match came in the 89th minute. A free kick was played into the box by Taylor Spaulding. The ball found Hamblin near the penalty spot, but her header went over the goal to extinguish the scoring threat.
 
MATCH NOTES
  • Cincinnati had 26 shots with 10 on frame. NKU recorded four shots, putting three on goal.
  • The Bearcats took 11 corner kicks in the match, while the Norse had one.
