ROCHESTER, Mich. – A strong start to the second half and key free throw shooting down the stretch helped the Northern Kentucky men's basketball team defeat Oakland, 87-83, on Friday night in a nationally-televised matchup of two squads picked to finish at the top of the Horizon League. With the win, NKU moves to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League play. Oakland falls to 9-7 on the season and 1-2 in the League.

  • Oakland had gotten the game to one possession at 81-79 with 27 seconds left in the contest. However, the Norse were able to go 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final seconds to preserve the win.
 
 
FIRST-HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse led 10-4 at the first media timeout, thanks to five points each from Holland and Williams.  
  • NKU had an eight-point lead early in the first half, but Oakland battled back and took its first lead of the game with 11:35 remaining in the first period.
  • The Golden Grizzlies were ahead 32-30 with 5:52 remaining, and they went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:12 to take a 40-30 lead. Oakland took a 47-41 advantage into halftime.
