HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Northern Kentucky University men's soccer team fell in double overtime at Marshall on Tuesday evening by a final score of 2-1. The Thundering Herd improve to 5-6-2 overall. NKU is now 9-5 on the season.
"Congratulations to Marshall on finding a way to win the match in what can only be described as incredibly unusual circumstances," said NKU head coach
Stu Riddle. "It would be easy to feel sorry for ourselves and point fingers right now, but we won't, and our focus immediately turns to a pivotal Horizon League match on Saturday."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
- Trailing 1-0, Alex Willis tied the match for NKU in the 61st minute. Connor Probert earned a free kick on the left side after he was fouled. Probert played the ball into the box, and Willis headed the ball to the right of the Marshall goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Ed Harvey played the entire match in net for the Norse. He faced 14 shots, but just three were on frame.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- Harvey was forced to make a save in the 10th minute on a shot by Marshall's Jamil Roberts. Roberts found some space on the left side, but Harvey punched the ball away from the goal for a corner kick.
- Marshall earned a free kick just outside the box in the 27th minute. The initial attempt was blocked, Illal Osmanu got to the ball for the Thundering Herd, but his header was to the right of the frame.
- The Thundering Herd had another free kick in the 33rd minute. Once again, the initial attempt was blocked by the NKU defense. Roberts got the ball for Marshall off of the deflection, but his attempt went wide of the mark.
- Kelan Swales nearly scored for Marshall in the 36th minute, but his shot was high of the mark.
- Alex Greive recorded the first shot for NKU in the 38th minute. His attempt was blocked by the Thundering Herd defense just inside the box.
- Liam Evans fired a shot in the 43rd minute, but the attempt was blocked by the Marshall defense and went out of bounds for a corner kick.
- The Norse earned a free kick in the final seconds of the half, but the ball eventually landed out of bounds as time expired.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Willis tried to score in the 47th minute. A free kick was played into the box to Willis, he put a header attempt on frame, but the Marshall goalkeeper made the save.
- Moments later, Greive fired a shot in the 48th minute, forcing the Marshall goalkeeper to make another save.
- Will Hunt recorded a shot on goal in the 49th minute. However, his attempt was also saved.
- Stian Jørgensen nearly scored on a header attempt in the 56th minute, but the shot was stopped by the Marshall goalkeeper.
- Later in the 56th minute, Marshall responded with a counter attack to take a 1-0 lead. Gianni Bouzoukis tapped the ball in from close range on a cross from the left side by Kelan Swales.
- Willis tied the match at 1-1 for NKU in the 61st minute.
- Marshall took a free kick from just outside the box in the 64th minute, but the attempt was just high of the net.
- Rikard Lindqvist blasted a shot in the 73rd minute, but the Marshall defense blocked the attempt.
- Willis looked to score his second goal of the match in the 74th minute. However, he was whistled offside.
- Bouzoukis found some space in the box for Marshall in the 79th minute, but his diving header went wide of the net.
- Calvin Murphy recorded a shot on goal in the 86th minute, but Marshall's goalkeeper was in position to stop the attempt.
OVERTIME SUMMARY
- The Norse went down to 10 men after a red card was issued early in the overtime period.
- Evans took a shot for NKU in the 96th minute, but it was blocked by the Marshall defense.
- Bouzoukis scored his second goal of the match in the 101st minute to give Marshall the 2-1 win.
MATCH NOTES
- Willis' goal was his 15th of the season.
- Marshall had a 14-11 shot advantage, but the Norse recorded six shots on goal, compared to three for the Thundering Herd.
- Marshall had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks during the contest.
