@NKUNorseWSOC tops UIC on Friday night, 1-0

CHICAGO – The Northern Kentucky University women's soccer team went on the road and picked up a 1-0 win against UIC on Friday evening. The Norse close out the regular season with a 10-5-1 overall record and a 6-2-1 mark in Horizon League play. UIC falls to 4-14-1 on the year and 3-6 in the league.
 
"Our team competed at a high level tonight," said NKU head coach Bob Sheehan. "Congratulations to B's (Brianna Frondorf) and Kailey Ivins for providing a spark off of the bench and setting up the game-winning goal to Shawna Zaken. It was important to refocus as we begin Horizon League tournament play on Monday."

  • Emily Lohmann faced 25 shots on the night and made 11 saves in the contest.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • Samantha Duwel took a shot in the third minute, but it was right at the UIC goalkeeper.
  • Lohmann made an easy save in the fifth minute on a shot by UIC's Tamae Douglas.
  • Emily Soltes fired a shot on goal in the sixth minute. However, her shot went right at the UIC goalkeeper.
  • In the 10th minute, UIC's Rebeca Pallo found some space on a breakaway, but Lohmann came out of the box and prevented Pallo from scoring.
  • Erin Sutton nearly scored for the Norse in the 19th minute. Payton Naylor played a cross into the box. Sutton was able to get a foot on the ball, but it went just wide of the goal.
  • The Norse earned a corner kick in the 25th minute and had two shots on goal, but both were saved by the UIC goalkeeper.
  • Zaken gave the Norse a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.
  • In the 35th minute, Duwel put a shot on goal, but it was saved by the UIC goalkeeper.
  • Duwel had another attempt in the 37th minute. She found a little bit of space close to the goal line and fired a shot, but the UIC defense closed in to block the shot.
  • Ivins took a low, hard shot in the 38th minute. However, her attempt was saved.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • Lohmann made a nice save on a shot attempt by UIC's Emily Kavanaugh in the 48th minute. A cross was played into the box, Kavanaugh got a foot on it, but Lohmann was in the right position to stop the shot.
  • In the 51st minute, Chloe Mills had a header attempt off of a corner kick, and the shot hit off of the post and bounced back into play.
  • Lohmann stopped a shot by UIC's Pallo in the 54th minute.
  • The Norse earned a free kick in the 59th minute. Duwel stepped up to take the kick, but it was right at the Flames' goalkeeper.
  • In the 60th minute, Lohmann made a save on a shot by UIC's Pallo.
  • Duwel took a hard shot in the 64th minute, but it went right at the UIC goalkeeper.
  • Lohmann made a nice save on a hard shot by UIC's Jennifer Savinski in the 66th minute.
  • UIC's Pallo found some space in the box in the 68th minute, but her attempt was high of the frame.
  • Lohmann had another good save in the 75th minute. UIC's Douglas took a shot, and Lohmann punched the ball over the goal for a corner kick.
  • In the 78th minute, Lohmann made an easy save on an attempt by UIC's Pallo.
  • UIC's Naomi Rushe fired a shot in the 83rd minute, but Lohmann punched the ball out for a corner kick.

  • Lohmann's 11 saves tied a career high. She also had 11 saves in last year's match against Milwaukee on Oct. 7, 2017.

  • The Norse have earned the No. 3 seed in the Horizon League Championship. NKU will host No. 6 seed Oakland on Monday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
