@NKUNorseMBB picks up convincing 78-60 win over UMBC on Friday

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. –  The Northern Kentucky University men's basketball team defeated UMBC on Friday evening by a score of 78-60. The Norse improve to 8-1 on the year, while the Retrievers fall to 4-4.
 
STATS LEADERS
  • Drew McDonald led the Norse with 21 points and five rebounds
  • Dantez Walton had a career-high 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. He also added five rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
  • Tyler Sharpe tallied 14 points and was 3-of-6 (50%) from behind the arc. He also had five rebounds and three steals.
  • Zaynah Robinson put up 10 points for the Norse and had four steals. Robinson also recorded six assists, which tied his season-high.  
  • Jalen Tate also had 10 points for the Norse and was 4-of-4 (100%) from the floor.
 
TURNING POINT
  • After falling behind early in the contest, the Norse outscored UMBC 30-2 over the final 8:36 of the first half to go ahead by 18 points. The deficit was too much to overcome for the Retrievers.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • UMBC started the game on a 9-0 run.
  • The Norse used a 16-0 run to take a 25-19 lead with 4:27 to play in the first half.
  • After a UMBC basket, NKU ended the half on a 14-0 run.
  • In the last 8:36, NKU outscored UMBC, 30-2.
  • NKU had a 24-12 advantage in points in the paint.
  • The Norse also outscored UMBC in fast break points, 23-0.

  • The Norse had 39 fast break points compared to UMBC's 15.  The 39 fast break points were the most for the program dating back to at least 2006.
  • NKU had 21 assists on 28 made field goals, marking the second-straight game where the Norse dished out 20 or more assists after handing out 23 against Morehead State on Tuesday. The last time Northern Kentucky posted back-to-back 20-assist games came in Dec. 2016 when it handed out 22 versus Eastern Washing and 23 against Brescia.
