@NKUNorseWBB dominates down low in 76-61 win over Detroit Mercy

DETROIT –Northern Kentucky University women's basketball won its first-round game of the Little Caesars Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship, downing Detroit Mercy 76-61. NKU moves to 9-21 on the season, while Detroit Mercy saw its season come to a close at 2-28.

STAT LEADERS
  • Kailey Coffey went 7-for-9 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free throw line for a career-high 20 points. She was just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds, and rejected a career-best four shots.
  • Taryn Taugher also matched her career mark of 20 points.
  • Mikayla Terry flirted with a triple-double, scoring 11 points while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out eight assists. She also had all five of NKU's steals.
  • Jazmyne Geist and Grayson Rose dominated on the boards, with 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • The Titans hit two early 3-pointers and took a 7-0 lead after NKU had four turnovers on its first four possessions.
  • However, the Norse were able to right the ship thanks to strong performances from Coffey down low and Taugher on the perimeter and outscored the Titans in the second quarter, 22-12, to hold a five-point edge at the half.
  • Taugher poured in 10 of her points in the stanza, while Coffey added nine.
  • The standout stat of the half was NKU's lead despite committing 13 turnovers, while UDM had just four miscues.
  • NKU bounced back from shooting 33.3 percent in the first quarter to connect at a .533 clip in the second. Conversely, UDM shot 50.0 percent in the opening quarter and dipped to 26.7 percent in the second.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse quickly extended out to a 10-point advantage, 39-21, off a pair of Taugher free throws.
  • NKU retained control of the third quarter after outscoring the Titans 21-10.
  • The Titans started the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run, and managed to outscore the Norse by a point, but were unable to get within 10 points again for the remainder of the contest.
  • NKU reduced its turnovers significantly, limited to six miscues in the second half.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • Head coach Camryn Whitaker picked up the first postseason win of her career.
  • NKU had a staunch advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Titans 53-22. The Norse had 24 offensive rebounds, more than UDM's overall rebounds. NKU's offensive rebounds led to 19 second chance points, while UDM was held to just one.
  • The Norse were also strong in the paint with 40 points down low compared to 18 for the Titans.
