@NKUNorseBSB defeats No. 6 Kentucky, 8-6

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team traveled to Lexington and picked up an 8-6 win over No. 6 Kentucky on Wednesday. The Norse move to 3-9 on the year. UK suffers its second loss of the season and drops to 12-2.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Jake Richmond went 2-for-6 at the plate with two hits, one of which was a grand slam, and four RBI.
  • Chad Roberts was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI.
  • Will Haueter went 2-for-3 in the contest with two doubles, two walks, and a run scored.
  • Cole Heavilin had a 2-for-3 showing at the plate with a double, a walk, a RBI and a run scored.
  • Dominic Mercurio was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams earned the win on the mound. He pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and two runs (one earned). He also struck out five batters in the game.
  • Jordan Menfee, Nick Beard and Joe Martin all pitched out of the bullpen. Martin got the save, as he pitched the ninth inning and struck out the final two batters that he faced.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Roberts gave the Norse a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo home run to right field.
  • UK scored two runs in the bottom of the second. Kole Cottam singled in the inning, and he moved to third base on Luke Heyer's ground rule double. Cottam scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Johnson, and Heyer also crossed the plate on a throwing error to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
  • The Norse loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning. Richmond stepped up to the plate and smashed a ball over the left center field wall for a grand slam to give NKU a 5-2 lead.
  • NKU added three runs in the fifth. Haueter led off the inning with a double, and he scored on a double by Mike Moffatt. After Mercurio was hit by a pitch, Roberts hit a double to center field to score Moffatt and make the score 7-2. Mercurio crossed the plate later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Heavilin to give NKU an 8-2 lead.
  • Kentucky scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to get within three runs at 8-5. Tristan Pompey hit a three-run homer for the Wildcats in the inning.
  • The Wildcats' Troy Squires hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to make the score 8-6. UK had the tying run at the plate in the frame, but Martin struck out the final two batters to allow NKU to get the 8-6 victory.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • This is the second time that the NKU baseball program has defeated a ranked team since its move to Division I. The first was also against Kentucky. NKU defeated the then No. 12 Wildcats on March 29, 2016, by a final score of 5-4.
  • The Norse outhit the Wildcats 12-7 during the game.
  • NKU committed one error in the field, and UK did not have an error.
  • The Norse stranded 11 runners on base in the contest, and the Wildcats left eight on base.
  • Moffatt has now hit safely in 10 straight games.
 
 
UP NEXT
  • NKU will play Miami (Ohio) in a three-game series this weekend. The first two games will be played at Miami, and the teams will close at the series at Bill Aker Stadium on Sunday.
