Penguins take series finale over @NKUNorseSB

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Northern Kentucky softball fell in the rubber match against Youngstown State, 9-4. The Norse drop to 17-13 overall and 4-4 in Horizon League play while the Penguins advance to 15-19 (6-6 HL).

In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther started in the circle and absorbed the loss, falling to 7-7 this season.
  • Ashlynn Roberts pitched 4.0 innings, striking out four batters while walking none.
  • Faith Howard entered the contest to pitch the final 1.2 innings. She recorded two strikeouts and one walk while allowing just one hit.
 
Scoring Summary
  • The Norse got on the board early, sparked by a leadoff single to center field by Frazier. She was driven in by a double to right center by Ferrante.
  • Mulder and Whitmer both clubbed two-out singles to give NKU a 3-0 lead. Mulder had her first RBI of the Horizon League season, driving in Ferrante, and was subsequently driven in by Whitmer.
  • The Penguins answered back with six runs in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of loaded bases for a run off a walk followed by a two-RBI single to take the lead. A two-RBI double gave YSU its fifth and sixth runs of the contest.
  • Neither team scored until the fifth inning, when a trio of errors allowed Alexander to reach base, advance along the base path, and score to bring NKU's deficit to 6-4.
  • Youngstown State used two errors to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame, taking a 9-4 lead.
  • NKU added one more run in the seventh when Lawson singled to left field and was driven in by Meter off a double to left center.
 
Norse Notes
  • Youngstown State takes a 5-4 lead in the all-time series with the Norse.
  • Ferrante recorded her 41st career double in the contest. She now owns sole possession of third on NKU's all-time career doubles list, surpassing Amanda Smith (2006-09) and Emily Schwaeble (2010-13).

  • NKU is back at home to host UIC this weekend on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
