Flames claim pair of wins over @NKUNorseSB

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.  – Northern Kentucky softball dropped both games of its Friday doubleheader against UIC by a 12-4 count. The Norse drop to 17-15 overall and 4-6 in Horizon League action, while the Flames move to 19-15 (8-3 HL).
                           
Game 1: UIC 12, NKU 4
 
At the Plate
  • In a high-hitting contest, the Flames out-hit the Norse, 16-10.
  • Madi Mulder went 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Ava Lawson stole the show with solo homers on consecutive at-bats, going 2-for-3 at the dish.
  • Josie Frazier also had a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
 
In the Circle
  • Taylor Ginther got the start for the Norse and pitched the first 6.2 innings, striking out one and walking seven. She falls to 7-8 with the loss.
  • Faith Howard pitched the final out for the Norse, facing two batters.
 
Scoring Summary
  • UIC got on the board with three runs in the first inning, all unearned, to establish the early lead.
  • The Norse had two runs in the bottom of the first off back-to-back RBI doubles. After Frazier led off with a single to left field, she was driven in by a double from Ferrante to left field. Ferrante was then scored by Mulder, who doubled to right center.
  • The Flames added two runs off an RBI double in the second to go up 5-2.
  • Lawson clubbed her first homer of the game, launching it over right field for her third home run of the season.
  • UIC's scoring tapered down with one run in the third before Lawson had her second round-tripper in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Flames ran away with the contest with six two-out runs in the final frame.
 
Game 2: UIC 12, NKU 4
 
At the Plate
  • Both teams had just one fewer hit than in the first game, with UIC out-hitting NKU 15-9. The Flames tied their program record with five home runs in a single game.
  • Zahrya McFarland went 2-for-2 and drove in one run, also drawing a walk.
  • Taylor Brummell had a 3-for-4 outing with a run scored.
  • Kara Meter went 1-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
 
In the Circle
  • Ashlynn Roberts pitched the first 3.1 innings, striking out two batters and walking three. She absorbed the loss and moves to 7-4 on the season.
  • Howard tossed the final 3.2 innings in relief, with one strikeout and no walks allowed.
 
Scoring Summary
  • The Flames set the tone early with a grand slam in the first inning, but were held scoreless in the second and third.
  • UIC added three more in the fourth with an RBI double and a two-run homer, to which the Norse answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
  • NKU got on the board starting with a single to right center from Mulder. Brummell advanced Alexis McDaniel, who entered as a pinch runner, with a double to right field, and McDaniel was driven in off a single to left field from Meter. Brummell scored off a bases-loaded walk drawn by Hailey Whitmer, and Meter crossed the plate thanks to a single to left field by McFarland.
  • UIC led the fifth off with a solo home run, and NKU once again matched that run when Lawson drove Meter in off a double deep into left field.
  • An RBI single in the sixth and back-to-back home runs in the seventh wrapped up scoring for the Flames.
