HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky softball fell short in both games of an afternoon doubleheader against Oakland on Wednesday. The Norse slip to 17-17 overall and 4-9 in Horizon League play, while the Golden Grizzlies improve to 11-21 and 5-5 in the League.
Game 1: Oakland 5, NKU 3
At the Plate
- The contest featured 22 total hits, but just a combined eight runs.
- Taylor Brummell, Sydney Ferrante and Alina Maher each clubbed a pair of hits for NKU.
- Brummell led NKU with a pair of RBI, while Ferrante added Northern Kentucky's third RBI.
- Ferrante, Kailey Rossiter and Isabell Alexander scored runs.
In the Circle
- Taylor Ginther went the distance for NKU, allowing five runs, three of which were earned.
Scoring Summary
- Oakland scored in the top of the first courtesy of a two-out Norse error.
- The Norse struck back in the third. Maher doubled, then Rossiter and Ferrante then knocked consecutive base hits. Brummell's single sent home the second run of the frame.
- NKU added another run in the fifth after Ferrante singled and took second on a throwing error as Oakland's right fielder tried to throw her out at first. After moving to third on Madi Mulder's groundout, Brummell drove in Ferrante with a single.
- A three-run homer from Oakland in the sixth put the Golden Grizzlies ahead for good, as they also added an insurance run in the seventh.
Game 2: Oakland 3, NKU 1
At the Plate
- Oakland outhit the Norse, 5-2.
- Brummell and Lawson had NKU's two hits, with Lawson driving in Brummell.
In the Circle
- Ashlynn Roberts tossed all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Only one of Oakland's runs was earned. She added two strikeouts and issued a pair of walks.
Scoring Summary
- After both pitchers worked clean frames in the first and second, Oakland struck for a pair of runs in the third inning to snag a 2-0 lead.
- Cammie Brummit tacked on an insurance run for the Golden Grizzlies thanks to a solo shot in the sixth.
- Both of NKU's hits came with two outs in the 7th. Brummell hit a ball off the left field fence for a stand-up double and Lawson followed with the run-scoring single.
