Xavier edges @NKUNorseBSB in back-and-forth contest, 7-5

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Xavier on Tuesday afternoon by a final score of 7-5. Xavier is now 14-26 on the year, while NKU drops to 10-28.

ON THE MOUND
  • Pat Kelley got the start on the mound for the Norse. He pitched three innings, allowing just one run on five hits. He also struck out six batters.
  • Kyle Service and Kaleb Meeks each pitched an inning. Service allowed three runs on three hits. Meeks allowed three runs on four hits and took the loss.
  • Travis Rowland pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, and he struck out four batters.
  • Joe Martin came out to pitch in the ninth inning, and he allowed only one hit.
 
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Mitch Gallagher hit an RBI single in the inning to score Nate Soria.
  • The Norse tied the game in the bottom of the second. Hohman's RBI single scored Rattai.
  • Doersching hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to put NKU ahead 3-1.
  • Xavier scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Chris Givin hit a two-run single in the inning, and Joe Gellenbeck added an RBI single.
  • The Norse took a 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the fourth. Andrew Bacon hit a sacrifice fly to score Rattai. Shane Paradis also scored in the inning on a wild pitch.
  • Xavier regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Givin hit a two-run triple, and he scored on a double by Allbry Major to make the score 7-5.
 
 
NORSE NOTES
  • Xavier had 14 hits in the contest, and NKU had eight.
  • The Musketeers stranded 11 runners, and NKU left seven on base.
  • Neither team committed an error.
